Costas The Great

Every guest greeted as they step out the car with a warm handshake, high five and a smile. Perfect Greek salad and delicious BBQ meats. Beautiful location next to a tiny 13th Century church. My son said it all looks like a film set, eg, it's unreal. Off the beaten track. Costas is great!

Costas and his family are warm and welcoming. The taverna is well off the beaten track in the tiny village of Maza. The location is as authentic as you can imagine. My son described the shuttered homes, windy road and 13th Century church which sits opposite the taverna as 'like a film set'. The food is very good but the... More

We have visited twice this year ! Visited Costi and Voula for Terrys 65th birhtday in May , called in for a drink at lunchtime and had a wonderful meal and impromtu singing . Then we were back a couple of weeks ago and had a couple of meals in the evening. Voula is the most amazing cook . Wonderful... More

We've travelled all over this amazing island. We've discovered unexpected pleasures in every off-beat corner, from mountainside to beach, and this little gem holds a place in our heart with the best of them. No pomp, no ceremony, hey... no menu, just a great welcome with typically Cretan hospitality and wonderful home-cooked food. Our longer than usual lunch with a... More

We found Costa's Restaurant by chance, we randomly turned off the the main road hoping to find something special. We stumbled across a man (full name Constantine I believe) waving us down, barbecuing in the road, lamb chops as big as you head. We had already ate a few hours earlier, but felt rude not to stop. There's no menu... More

Our second to visit to Maza and of course it would not be complete without multiple visits to Costas & Voulas Taverna. This is a real family run affair in the heart of Crete run by a family who want nothing more than to please their guests. This time we gave Costas some notice and asked for some fresh fish... More

Back to Maza for the third year and back to the Kafenikon for a warm welcome and hearty, beautifully cooked food. Kostas is several times larger than life, Voula a gifted cook - no menu and it helps to give warning you are coming earlier in the day. You sit outside on the village square, next to the little church,... More

We loved Costos' caferion. Costos will cook you anything you would like and will show you the amazing church wonderful frescoes from the 14th century next door with to his Caferion. He is a wonderful host and we found the Caferion very relaxing and lots of fun with our two kids.

Our second visit to Maza. What a welcome we got. Kostas and Voula remembered us from last year and made a tremendous fuss of us. The food is as good as ever, highlights being Voula's moussaka and pork chops from the grill. Ask Kostas in advance to get some fish. This really is an experience. The road up to the... More
