The Monte Christo was sold this past spring so that restaurant is gone. It has been replaced by The White Whale in the same lovely location overlooking an offshoot of the Courtenay River.

One of our long time favourites closed their doors this past summer. The new name is White Whale. First and second impression, not good. Inexperienced staff, maybe they were trying too hard to please. Beer was good..

Went for dinner on the patio, full tide and nice table. Seafood charcuterie was really really good, we all loved the duck dip ..brimming full of meat and flavourful au jus! Then came the two, yes two, desserts rich and decadent .. served with warm wraps to cuddle up in and enjoy sunset.

My LUNCH cost me over $30.00!! Terrible food! Same bad food - same pompous host. I was really looking forward to a new dining experience- instead I got bad food and a sloppy make-over of the interior.I ordered ice tea - was given "their special blend" @ $4.00 a glass. Waitress asked if I wanted a "top-up". I thought this... More

We were looking forward to somewhere new and exiting with a brilliant concept of Craft Beer meets local foods. I don't drink craft beer (my loss I know) and the rest of the drinks menu was sparse. The food menu was as sparse and some of the dishes are exceptional whilst others are dreadful. We have tried the Carpaccio :(... More

Nothing special about the food...the place was nothing to talk about before when it was Monte Christo and it is still the same ho-hum atmosphere and the food is beyond blah. The only thing it has going for it is the river view and outdoor seating. Maybe they should turn it into a kayak rental place and vegetarian food restaurant?... More

It's so nice to find a new restaurant in the old Monte Christo location. The old place was tired and outdated. This new place has added a coat of paint but have made no other noteworthy changes to the building. The menu is surprisingly short of choices. The food is really very good. The portions look small but everyone in... More

This restaurant is located in the former Monte Christo's space. The interior has been refreshed and the art has been changed (thankfully). As of this writing they are not yet taking reservations. They have only been open under this name for 3 days. It was nice to see the former owner Chris greeting guests ( I assume he is helping... More

White Whale is in the location of Monte Christo on the River which it has now replaced. They don't seem to have a website yet nor a takeout (for reference) menu. They have only been open a few days so bear this in mind when reading the review. DH & Pal Rick went for lunch today. They both enjoyed, particularly... More

This is a wonderful place for luncheon on a warm sunny day. However, the inside is dated, dark and a bit musty. The food is good and there are lots of umbrellas for hot days. The patio is right next to a branch of the river with salmon, seals and ducks.
