Once a pub, now mainly a restaurant and part of a chain, the Durham Ox delivers good "gastro-pub" food in pleasant surroundings. We shared a seafood platter. Smoked salmon, scallops- slightly overwhelmed by cheese and cream- battered haddock, prawn cocktail. Main was a well judged haunch of venison. It came with Savoy cabbage in (again, slightly too much) cream. I... More

My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary with a meal at the Durham Ox. The location is hard to beat, nestled in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors, with an inviting terrace for pre-dinner drinks. The service was excellent, and the approach of the staff led to a very relaxed, informal dining experience, unlike some of the... More

You wouldn't believe how difficult it is trying to find somewhere to go that accepts dogs, has a decent veggie menu and decent gluten free menu. This place was top notch. 5 * to whoever it is at the Durham Ox that puts the menu together. Loads of food options for all parties. Food was delicious. Service was good. Staff... More

Lovely atmosphere and the pub and dining room are quirky and well presented. The bar allowed well behaved dogs which added to the relaxed environment. Gluten-Free menu is really large and offers all sorts of choices. They serve everything with potatoes instead of chips but you can ask for chips if you want to, although they do warn you that... Only problem was the noise from non-residents in the bar leaving after 1am in cars sounding horns ,same people spoil it for others ,paying nearly... More

We were staying at the Durham Ox for 2 nights and ate there both evenings. The food is good but I believe it is a little over priced. We were there on a Monday & Tuesday and the restaurant was very busy on both nights. it obviously has a good reputation and I would think you would need to book... More

Real ale, fine wine and excellent dining can be found in this quintessential country pub with luxury accommodation. The Durham Ox is situated in a picturesque village in an area of outstanding natural beauty driveable to York, a great city with lots to see and do, but also very close to open moors and dales for walking etc.
