Lovely Sunday Cavery

We've been to the Talbot many times over the past 3 or 4 years as we can walk to it via Wytham Woods, (permit required), and then catch the frequent S1 bus that stops outside back. We visited again today and it was very good. The Sunday carvery was excellent and other dishes looked very good with... read more

Visited yesterday (Sunday) having seen great reviews for the Carvery. We were 4 adults and 4 children. The place was extremely busy (out booking was for 2pm) and we therefore expected to have to wait to be served. We were wrong. Ordered drinks after a few minutes and a few minutes later they arrived with a very polite and friendly... More

My 3rd review of The Talbot. Sunday lunch with friends, their first visit. Booked on Wednesday before, good job we did, the place was packed. Nevertheless the service was excellent, food plentiful, hot and tasty. If it were possible I would give 6 stars! Will definately return. My experiences definately good so won't review again unless standards slip!

We stayed here for one night in one of the rooms in the newer extension. The mattress was thin and uncomfortable but the worst was the bathroom, mouldy tiles in the shower, and a broken toilet roll holder. Breakfast was okay although difficult with one member of staff who didn't seem to speak English very well. A disappointing stay given... More

Hi Jen. Many thanks for your recent review - albeit to read that you were disappointed. We are in the process of refurbishing the bar & restaurant and we look to address these issues too. Please email me next time you are in Oxford as I would like to offer you a favourable rate to put it right More

I'm part of a team that often have to work away in Oxford and my office usually books us into the Talbot 'cos their accomodation is usually the most reasonably priced within striking disttance of Oxford centre. But for me the bar, the beer and the food are easily as important as the accomodation, which in any case the owner... More

The bar, the food and the beer are all great at the Talbot - as are the rooms. We refurbished the economy rooms and they really are quite pleasant now. They offer, arguably, the best value accommodation in Oxford. We are pleased that you like the Talbot More

Each time I have called The Talbot to book either for a party of 12 or just for 2 adding that 2 of us are Vegan and asking can you accommodate us? the answer was always yes and the food was always delicious. We have had an amazing risotto on 2 occasions we have had mild curry and I can't... More

Hi Thanks for your 5 star review. Just to clarify, we haven't changed our chef. Previously, we have had plenty of notice to create a worthy vegan meal however, you wanted to book for that day and we didn't have the commodities available. In the past, when you have given us a reasonable time, we go to the supermarkets and... More

Numerous staff bouncing around behind bar and possibly on other side of bar... difficult to know exactly "who" to address "enquiry-to-eat" question. Sensed "nerves" in staff - like it was all their first week? It felt like an effort to establish a starting point with them, such as where we were going to sit, setting up a tab - which... More

Hi. Thanks for your review, albeit not a good one. I'm sorry that you thought the staff were a little edgy - they're generally very good, as you can see in other reviews. We do get the odd glitch, as in any establishment. As to our menu, we find it extremely popular. Lots of choice of pub fayre - not... More

We set off for my husband's birthday weekend to Oxford - not expecting the Ritz but a clean 'economy' room. We have stayed in many Youth Hostels around the UK and let me tell you these are like the Ritz in comparison to this dreadful place. We entered the bar area to collect our keys and were led through a... More

I find reviews like this hard to stomach to be honest. I will happily accept a poor review if it's factual and fair. You booked an ECONOMY room, twin with shared facilities. A short while after checking in your partner came down to complain and stated that you had booked a double room with en suite facilities. Could there be... More
