Ranked #2 of 5 restaurants in Bridge
Certificate of Excellence 2014
Cuisines: French, Contemporary, Gastropub
Dining options: Reservations, Late Night
Description: Located in the village of Bridge, just outside Canterbury, The Red Lion is a traditional British pub with a splash of French restaurant flair. Eye-catching from the outside, The Red Lion boasts a uniquely old fashioned exterior brought up-to-date with a lick of light coloured paint, while inside is comfortable and cosy, a traditional space with olde worlde charm in its rough beams and pillars the ideal village pub. But while the dcor might be traditional, The Red Lions menu is less so. With the influence of host Rene Renault (from Rennes no less), the kitchen has added French sophistication to locally sourced ingredients - including eggs from the owners own hens in modern creative dishes.

After yet another indifferent meal endured in Canterbury I thought I must write a review for the Red Lion, which has never let us down. (I don't know why we eat anywhere else) The Red Lion is a very attractive, clean, well maintained historic English pub run by a Frenchman! The food is excellent, good value, very well presented, served... More

Booked in here by chance, and left after a pleasant evening and a substantial meal. Good ambiance and a fair amount of Anglo/French banter among the locals and with the host. Service attentive but not obtrusive. The aspagus and ducks egg starter was excellent, and the pork loin that followed was similarly good and left no room for a dessert!... More

stumbled across The Red Lion hoping for a late bite to eat with my partner yesterday. Friendly landlord with a lovely dog (we also had ours with us), we ordered Sausage & Mash and a Burger. Both were very well presented, great portions and tasted great. Could not fault the Sausage & Mash and the bacon in the burger really... More

starter, main and dessert tasted great at a very affordable £13.99 deal, options were: homemade, no-nonsense pretentious gastro food, just high quality pub grub: perfect tartare sauce with cornichons and capers, crunchy whitebait, wholesome veggie cream soup with fresh bread; a delicious main course of chicken with bacon and mushrooms in a rich wine sauce with crispy french fries and... We used to visit the Red Lion frequently but haven't been for over 3 years due to moving away. We got a very friendly welcome, the pub was buzzing and the menu was varied. The mussels were excellent and the set menu was good value. Would have liked a main course salad option. We will return when we are next... More

We came her for dinner one Saturday night before Christmas. Rene and Harry and extremely welcoming. The waiting staff were helpful. The food and choice on offer great. The pub looks clean and is very nicely decorated and has a great atmosphere. Definitely my favourite pub in this area. Fantastic for kids too. Rene seems to have managed to create... More

Bev & I had a Christmas meal here recently and the food was quite poor the Gravadlax was not of good quality, the Turkey main had overcooked hard roast potatoes which were probably left in a heated dish for hours and the Veg was hard. Christmas pudding was individual mini puds that you buy in Asda for £1 obviously microwaved... More

Nice and homely with a bit if a twist the food is tasty but fancy for a pub and slightly overpriced despite having a taste card!!! Fine for a Tuesday night but nothing special!!!
