Outstanding food

As others have said, the pub has no pretentions, so we didn't expect too much when ordering fish cakes, but they were well presented and absolutely delicious, on a bed of samphire, topped with calamari and white crab meat. The surrounds were a bit rough and ready, but don't be put off - beer and... read more

Went in today at 13.30 for a lunch snack, 2 customers in bar and no one eating. Ordered food and went to sit in garden, 40 minutes later enquires where our food was, to be told it had not even been ordered from the kitchen, Had the cheek to blame a busy time and "mistakes happen"! Go anywhere but here.

If you want fine dining in a swanky air conditioned room with expensive cutlery served by highly trained professionals you are in the wrong place. The Red Lion serves good honest pub food to hard working locals and the odd tourist that finds his way in here. It hasn't changed in years and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Third year staying in area and as usual visited the red lion. The fish is to die for had cod and haddock. Crab was lovely. Love the friendliness of the place full of characters you don't need a sweet after your main course. We always phone to book as not a lot of tables

We are staying nearby and decided to try the local pub food, having tried another pub first and found it to be very unfriendly, the red lion was a very nice change. The bar maid couldn't have been more friendly, if a little dizzy, the food itself was great and reasonable prices. We wouldn't hesitate to go back. Ignore the... More

Found this great place just driving past, went in for the crab soup and must say it was one of the best soups I've ever had. The service was friendly and great with the kids while the food was just delightful.

Great traditional pub overlooking the harbour. Food freshly cooked and worth the price, no frills but full of flavour. The staff are very friendly and willing to help.

Excellent service and top notch food. The fisherman's pie was by far the very best I have eaten. It was plum full of fresh Newlyn crab, prawns and fresh tasty fish in a light creamy sauce. Fluffy pastry on top and amazing flavours. The ribs were cooked to perfection falling off the bone but tender and moist. The sauce was... More

Fab crab soup in a big ceramic farmhouse bowl, garlic bread with crushed garlic and butter. Even the jacket potato had a big knob of butter, no horrid little foil packets. Lovely puddings if you have room for one. This is a no pretence, traditional, unmodernised newlyn fisher mans pub, with great views and a courtyard garden, friendly and Cornish. Pip.
