Poor service and pricey

We were 8 girlsfriends who were looking for a place to eat just before an event at the Centaur Theatre. We made reservations before hand. When we got there, they had made a mistake and organized seating for 6 only. They fixed it for us. There were a lot of groups of women who had the same idea... read more

We went there more than 15 years ago, and really enjoyed it... and decided to go again last night for a dinner with the family, and it was as enjoyable as last time. Prices are reasonable, service was extraordinary, and the food was incredible. On the week-ends there's a Mariachi band that play, which adds to the atmosphere. Will have... More

I cant describe how good everything was! It was one of the best night I ever had with my girlfriends! We have ordered each the Mateo's margarita and I recommand everyone to taste this special drink! We then ordered fresh guacamole which they do it at the table! The most delicious and tasty guacamole I ever had! The ambiance was... More

My husband and arrived at the restaurant to meet with friends. We were hoping to get a drink while waiting. 1. Our reservations were not found. 2. We were ignored for 20 minutes. When I managed to flag down a woman who seemed to act as the maitre'd, she made it clear that we were bothering her. 3. When the... More

I was ate at this restaurant last night and was very disappointed. The service was poor (lack of chips and salsa on arrival, Guacamole that had been ordered but never arrived) and the food mediocre (cold, with almost no sauce on my duck, cloyingly sweet mango chicken, undercooked aubergine). I asked the waitress to bring the manager so I could... More

January 31, 2015...Horrible experience at Casa de Mateo. 1st the surliest of waitresses sits us near the front door that get very cold every time someone opens it to come in. We ask to move and she refuses. Maybe we should have insisted more like at least 4 other groups did and whom where moved accordingly. The waitress never smiles... More

My 11-year old daughter and I both love Mexican food, and we weren't disappointed! We started with their guacomole, which is so fresh. We finished with a chicken/filet mignon fajita for 2, and we both loved it! Plan on going back... again and again!

We enjoyed our dinner here very much. Definitely a big step up from most "Mexican" restaurants. Very warm and relaxing setting, and the food was excellent. Try the guacamole appetizer - mixed up right at your table, so you are consulted about the extra ingredients -onions, diced tomatoes, parsley, etc. - you wish added. Everything we tried was really good,... More

Great Mexican in nice setting. Two entrees and two drinks came in at $65, before tip. Great margueritas - didn't cheap out on the tequila. Enchilladas and tacos were excellent. Would recommend.

My fiancé and I came here on our trip to Montreal and it was wonderful. We had the fundido to start and it was so good, the flavours were really great. The guac was the best I've had. I had the pollo de la diabla and it was very spicy, which I love, and again full of flavour. If I... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
