Great music, Yummy food

OK, so we went to see Carol Welsman, one of Canada's jazz singing greats that not enough people have heard about. She is a terrific entertainer with a golden voice and a splendid sense of timing. As a pianist, she can be dramatic, plaintive, subtle, delicate and loud and her playlist is a pot... read more

My wife Sheryl and I are from Burlington, VT but we're up here in Montreal to visit our relatives for the holidays. Our relatives had already been to the Upstairs bar and since they knew that I love jazz and blues they told me to come here. All I have to say is WOW! The music was just amazing and... More

I am in Montreal for two weeks...cat-sitting. Yep, so very exciting that it was hard to tear myself away and head downtown...but I did! And it was worth it! Lovely bar. Great people and fun music! I decided weeks ago that I wanted to go to Upstairs on Wed Dec 16 and see Frim Fram play. I didn't make a... More

A very well known Jazz Bar on Mackay in Montreal. Very crowded but well behaved crowd during a superb Benny Goodman like Jazz quartet. My Linguini with meat balls was perfect and so was my wife's all dressed hamburger ( in the dark) . This is one of the great jazz spots in the city ,and the bill for the... More

Here is one place to go to enjoy a great meal (cajun style) and let your self drift with the great sound of jazz. Service is excellent and always done with a smile. Good place for romantic supper or a night out with friends to watch a jazz show selected by Joel. Highly recommended for a great evening supper or... More

This restaurant jazz bar is centrally located near rene levesque boulevard. My son invited me to dine at the house of jazz but the service was so awfull that we left and took a taxi to this place. We did not regret because they greeted us as we were returning customers and we were very well seated without having a... More

A friend recommended the three of us take a visit. $12 taxi ride as pouring with rain found the place with ease. Perfect three person round table towards the front gave us a great position. Waiter extremely prompt with menus, water and wine. Chose a mixed salad starter that was tasty and the burgers which were cooked to perfection and... More

The musicians were crazy-talented. We loved it. The host was friendly and helpful. The drinks were pricey but very good.

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighborhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
