Still Going Strong

Not much more can be said about Schwartz's that hasn't already been said many times. It remains one of Montreal's iconic venues for smoked meat while providing reassurance that "not all that is old invariably gives way to new". The smoked meat is what it is. Some is more tender than other, some... read more

If it's your first time, get the 'smoked meat' plate! Fresh cut fries, pickle, and a nice smoked meat sandwich (yes, it's called smoked meat). Small place, long line, but some of that line is for takeout. Once you get close, keep your eyes/ears open (and off your phones!), you can get seated (if there's seats available) if everyone ahead... No atmosphere. Nothing special about the food. Adored by many, many fans who are willing to wait in line outside, even in frigid weather, for the smoked meat (better elsewhere), karnetzel and little franks (actually very good) in this piece of the Montreal Main that used to be,

Went with the family. Only go if you eat meat. The only other option is turkey and it's nothing special. The family loved their sandwiches. Very simple, meat, bread, mustard. Pickle and fries on the side. Straight forward place. Communal seating. Table are for 6, we were 4, sat with two strangers. Kinda weird. Wait staff rocked. Worth a bite.

Schwartz's in Montreal provides the experience that Katz's in NYC advertises, without letting the kitsch get over the top. Had a divine late-night smoked meat sandwich and pickle with a cherry coke. Perfect cap to a lovely day, surrounded by Montrealers. Highly recommend a stop here.

I don't get to eat good smoked meat sandwiches - or any for thast matter - very often (living where i do). This place offerings are simply THE BEST. We ate there twice on this trip - both times for lunch. We sat with people from Connecticut and Australia. We laughed with the wait staff - and would go back... More

I had been to this restaurant about 10 years ago and knew it was a must do on a recent trip with friends. We arrived on a Saturday to a line probably 40 people deep! I expected a 45 min wait but it was more like 25 min. And they were pulling groups of two or less from the line... More

Another classic Montreal Institute. I've read some that say the smoked meat is not as good as it was before, but that being said, i still found the smoked meat to be excellent and moist (ordered the fatty cut). not much of a lineup on a Monday afternoon, but to clear a table for 10 people, we had to wait.... We were excited by everyone saying we have to go to Schwartz when in Montreal. So we did. Overpriced for a sandwich. Spent $40 for two sandwiches one order of fries and a pickle and two pop. I could have had a much better meal for the same price. And really small. They rush people in and out. Won't go... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
