Come for the smoked meat, stay for the experience

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said: Schwartz's is an institution, a classic Montreal experience. It looks kinda old and worn and thrown together and you can barely read the faded menu on the wall (the only place it's located) and you aren't even really sure what to do when you... read more

The very best smoked meat I have ever eaten in North America. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

My husband and I had lunch at Schwartz's a little after 1 p.m. on a Thursday and were seated right away. I didn't realize they just crammed you in with a bunch of random people, but I ended up feeling like it was part of the experience and it was fun. I've never heard of brisket referred to as just... I was told before we came in this trip to Montreal that Schwartz's had the best smoked meat sandwiches in the city. We were told by two others once we arrived. We tried it for lunch today and were not disappointed. After being seated quickly (although I'm told sometimes there's a line, but worth the wait) we didn't have to... More

This restaurant is ok for a fast meal. Smoke meat is popular. However seating is at tables of 6 people 3 facing each other. Not much privacy. All items are a la carte. A one time visit is enough. Not a must go restaurant.

Smoked meat? Yes it is corned beef. Based on Trip Advisor reviews we knew we had to indulge at least once and picked Schwartz's over its competitor. Service was good. We opted for the "lean" version and it was certainly lean, moist, tender, flavorful. Coleslaw was fantastic, would love to have the recipe. We arrived about 10:45 am and we're... More

Two visits in one week, it was fantastic. Service was quick and friendly. Not so busy mid week, but worth the wait and the cost.

This was our last stop in Montreal and I'm glad we went. The staff members were fantastic - they like to joke around and have fun while working. There is not much to say about the restaurant itself. It's quite boring - but there is no need when you're enjoying the food and service as much as we did. The... More

Schwartz has always been the best Montreal Smoked Meat. People line up out the door. Inside is small so do plan to wait if eating in. It is worth the wait.

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
