Best dinner of our trip

A group of us spent one night in Montreal on our way back from skiing at Mont Tremblant; Holder was THE best dinner of the entire trip. We were a bit wary at first --this is a large restaurant (seats more than 200) and it's loud. But the wait staff was great and the food was excellent. This... read more

Visited Holder on a Tuesday evening last week and thought it odd that it would be so quiet. My brother, who lives in Montreal indicated that over the winter on a weeknight, it is not uncommon for that part of the city to be quiet as everyone rushes home from work rather than staying in the city. Drinks: Ordered mixed... More

It was a business lunch. Four of us ordered Grilled Salmon Steak and the 5th ordered Tenderloin Veal Steak. All dishes were very good. We enjoyed as all dishes were cooked according to request. It was followed by a very tasty Warm Pineapple cake and Vanilla Crème Brule were for desert. The service was fast in spite of the restaurant... More

My husband and I went here for dinner on our last visit to Montréal. I ended up ordering the blackened halibut which was simply divine. My husband ordered the beef cheeks which he wasn't a huge fan of. Overall the service was good and food was enjoyable. I would definitely come back.

This was our 3rd time at Holder and I figured I'd review this time. The restaurant has a lot of dishes you'd typically see for a steakhouse. For the most part, this place delivers for you'd expect for mid-to-high end restaurant in the Old Port. The Good: - The service is great. Attentive and knowledgeable. - The food is definitely... Great meal, good atmosphere and excellent service! The manager was very involved with the staff and checked on us several times. My son dropped his knife and by the time he had bent down to pick it up, a staff member had a new one for him.

I was referred by my co-workers to this restaurant and I was quite surprised with its style and food quality. Everything was excellent.

We came on the Saturday of New Year's weekend without a reservation but were quickly seated at a table near the bar [it was also around 8:30pm]. We tried the lobster ravioli, lamb Shepard's pie and Rapini -- everything was delicious. The bread before the meal was really good and the butter was very creamy. Nice place for a special... More

Our dinner here was fabulous! I ordered the special shrimp dish on risotto and it was delicious! My husband ordered prime rib and it melted in his mouth! Ambience is very trendy and hip. Interesting menu. Waiter very friendly and helpful when ordering. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. If you like white wine,... More

This place is pretty big but still providing a cosy ambiance. The food is very good at a reasonable prices. I had the Magret de Canard on a risotto which was a special. Good pick! The wine are a bit expensive though, especially by the glass. The staff is very welcoming and nice, the service is also top noch. A... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
