Great food, great atmosphere!

We were impressed with the service and the food, especially given that we were a group of 11. The value was super and we would definitely return on our next visit.

Ideally situated on McGill ave on the outskirts of Old Montreal, Holder's holds on to its status after many years in business, slowly becoming a Montreal institution. A large European style brasserie set in grand art deco styling, the service is prompt, courteous, but relaxed. For diner yesterday evening, when we asked young Lorie about the wine list, she kindly... More

Service, food, and location were absolutely perfect. I had my birthday dinner here, and everything was just so comfortable and enjoyable. The food was excellent, and the servers were more than accommodating to every request. I highly, highly recommend.

This is a fabulous restaurant with a very high-brow menu. My wife had the beef cheeks--they were melt-in-your-mouth good (pun intended). My daughter had the mussels--it seemed like the bowl kept refilling itself. Delicious! I had the steak tartare. It was life-changing. My son had the fish and chips--it is the most pedestrian meal on the menu. He enjoyed it.... More

In town on business and the Westin staff recommend Holder as a typical French bistro. Turns out it was an excellent choice. I had the hanger steak and my colleague has the PEI mussels. Red wine was excellent. We went with the truffles for dessert.

Menu provides a great array of enticing entrees. We enjoyed fish soup, mussels in a cream broth, generous serving of duck pate, and hangar steak smothered in carmelized onions. Surprisingly, French onion soup did not appear on the menu. Excellent wine list. Wait staff was quite attentive. The clientele included families with young children.

I knew I picked a good place because the restaurant was filled mostly with Montreal natives there for happy hour or after work dinner. Great wine selection. My sister and I had oysters to start and we both got the lobster ravioli, which was great. We had a butterscotch cake for dessert that was to die for, it was like... More

We were directed here by our hotel and we were extremely happy. The atmosphere is busy and vibrant in a modern space. The service was great, water glass constantly filled and attentiveness. Everyone loved their food, great steak frites but the best thing we had was a buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad with prosciutto and pine nuts, simply put, AWESOME.... More

The concierge of the W Hotel recommended Holder to me as I was dinning by myself. I checked out the reviews and decided to experience Holder. I was very pleased. I sat in the bar area and the server was attentive. Nice wine list and good menu choices. I had the salmon done medium rare with green beans. The Salmon was... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
