Seven nights a week, local bands take the stage at Montreal's hottest Jazz bar and bistro. Modavie's spirited setting encompasses two intimate floors and sets the scene for a night of great tunes, top dining and generous pastis toasting. The bistro's far-reaching wine menu hits just the right notes and helps round off succulent lamb, fish, beef and inspired pasta dishes.

Great Friendly Atmosphere AND Terrific Food

We were with some guests from California on a very rainy Montreal night. Our guests had rack of lamb and said it was the BEST they had ever eaten. Lorenzo had a table for us, even though the Restaurant was fully booked. What a charming personality. We came in as strangers and left as friends. Ask Sonja, the bartender, to mix her signature Cocktail for you. We had such a pleasant experience that we will be back in August.

My husband, colleagues and I were attending a professional conference in Montreal 2-8 May 2015. Old Port Montreal has "hit and miss" restaurants as far as serving authentic Quebecoise food, ambiance and local wines. Host Lorenzo greeted us at the door and personalized our lunch dining experience by engaging us in conversation on our preferences in wine and menu along... More

We went for dinner on a Monday night and enjoyed the jazz and it would have been perfect but... When we walked in the owner? said that lamb was their specialty. I ordered a lamb burger and then a bit later asked the waitress to make sure it was rare. She said it had to be medium well! If she... More

I read about this on a "best of" list that said it was famous for lamb and jazz. I was excited for the jazz, but I don't eat lamb--- but after looking at the menu and seeing a variety of the choices, we decided to try it. The girl next to us did order lamb and it looked delicious, but... More

From the moment we walked in, Lorenzo greeted us like family and treated us to an extraordinary evening of delicious food, wonderful wines and great jazz. We didn't have a reservation, but we were quickly seated at the very comfortable bar. The staff is friendly and helpful, the ambience is second to none, food is fab!. A great evening!! Thanks... This place was a great fine. It took us about 5 minutes to choose this restaurant after reading the reviews and menu. We tried to go for Saturday night, but everything was booked, but we were able to make a reservation for the following night no problem. Lorenzo, the owner, was extremely friendly and welcoming to our party, which made... More

I always eat at Modavie when I visit Montreal for business. Their lamb chops are to die for and extremely generous in portion. However this past visit in March was specially enjoyable because of our server Lorenzo who helped us make the right choices with our meals. He even served us a post dinner sherry on the house. A dinner... More

Went to Modavie for a business function on a beautiful May evening. Before even entering, the charm of old Montreal gave this restaurant an almost unfair advantage over other places I've been to. The charm of its location was just the beginning. Once inside we were seated in the upstairs section (as we were a larger group) and were immediately... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
