great food, nice atmosphere; pricey

Excellent Indian food. I ate here twice in my visit to Montreal, once solo and once with colleagues. Over the time I and my colleagues had garlic naan, dal soup, chana masala, aloo ghobi, and saffron rice. Vegetarians will do very well, and so will vegans. Servers were helpful and quick to... read more

While I still rate this place as excellent because it is, my second visit was not as great as my first. Why? We did not get the sauces to add to our meal like last time. The bread was not flowing like it did last time. Service was excellent, food quality was excellent. I guess my first visit was simply... More

Whenever I'm in Montreal I have one dinner at Le Taj. Delicious Northern Indian cuisine with impeccable service in a lovely dining room. Choose the Taj Thali from the menu for a complete experience (appetizer, entree, dessert, coffee/tea, nan bread). The lamb curry was delicious. Whatever you choose, you won't go wrong!

I was with my family on the lookout for a decent Indian restaurant when the hotel frontdesk recommended this.It was full on Wednesday night around 9.30pm which was a healthy sign being midweek. We were happy with the ambience and were soon seated. The menu is well composed. We ordered non-veg plate, butter chicken, rice & dal. The food was... More

If you are looking for a special treat, visit Le Taj for the lunchtime buffet. For a very reasonable $16.95 you can have your fill of a delicious variety of freshly prepared and beautifully displayed Indian dishes from appetizers to desert. The ambience is cheerful and friendly with Indian decor, attentive staff and sparkling white starched linen. The food is... More

The waiters and staff were friendly and efficient and the restaurant had a great atmosphere. The food was a bit of a letdown, I asked for hot but got an overall bland tasting dish loaded with little bits of cinnamon which are not pleasant to bite into - easy to do in a simply lit restaurant. The reason I wouldnt... More

The food here is delicious but what really makes this restaurant wonderful is the great service and enjoyable ambiance. The aloo gobi and the bhindi masala are divine. Spicy, but in the perfect way. We also ordered samosas which came with a variety of sauces and were excellent!!

No disappointment or bad surprises each time we go there. We have been to this restaurant on a number of occasions and each and every time we were quite happy with the service, cleanliness and quality of food. The Indian dark beer is also highly recommended.

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighborhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
