authentic french canadian food

great experience! I went with my family and they were had a variety of selections on their menu. I tried the bone marrow for the first time... it was interesting and probably the most farthest I would venture to try different food. It had a gelatinous consistency so if you are not a fan of fatty... read more

This truly Parisian Bistro is by now a Montreal landmark. It is unique in each and every way. The atmosphere is unique, the food is outstanding and the service by a staff that has been with this institution sometimes for decades is full of charm while utmost professional. Try and find a table without a reservation at almost any time... More

Now this is a really nice French bistro with really good food and an impressive wine list. The setting is really inspired from French bistros. Also, not really expensive for the quality of the food.

Visited this restaurant the second week in August for brunch. It is located in a very hip neighborhood, equidistant between two metro stops so very accessible. The restaurant has a dated appearance and the service is efficient but not very friendly (although since we are not fluent in French, will give a pass), but the food is very good. My... More

This is a great restaurant if you are looking for a nice simple meal, with old style service. The food is pretty good, service is excellent, it makes you feel like you are in a Bistro in Paris. Only a small note, we had the "ile flottante" for dessert, it was delicious, the only thing is, it doesn't need the... More

We had not been to l'Express for a while. Our son decided this was the location for his birthday lunch. Frankly, I wanted to try a newer, different location. We have so many new dining opportunities in Montreal. Well we went to l'Express. What a lovely lunch. Everything we ate was delish. My son and I had the seafood soup.... More

I heard senior colleagues reminisce about L'Express long before I dined there myself. Apparently, in the 80s and 90s, people would flock there after the theatre for a very late dinner. Apparently, many people still do, which is a testament to the high standards of this iconic St-Denis bistro. L'Express is essentially a gateway to Paris, as many others here... More

This restaurant came with a recommendation from a friend that owns a restaurant and is a Montreal native. Maybe we ordered the wrong entrees. The chicken liver with pistachio pate and the house bread were great. The veal with mushrooms was over cooked and the hanger steak was a some other cut and was tough. The frites needed new oil... Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
