Pleasantly casual ambience with friendly informative service

Interesting that my first thoughts for the review were not about the food. I was most impressed by the location, the service and the ambience. The wine, beer and scotch selections we're generous and interesting. The food was very good. The veal tartare and liver pate were delicious. But I was... read more

Montreal is lucky to have more than our fair share of informal restaurants that serve up food worthy of the swankiest table. Les 400 Coups is in the front row of this category, easily on a par with the much-fêted Pastaga, which I've reviewed a handful of times. Both restaurants focus on creating original dishes using unexpected combinations of relatively... More

Love it there . Go for dessert and wine on every trip to Montreal Exceptional food Only concern is that is seemed more formal than in previous visits. Sitting at the bar is my favorite place to be

I went there with a friends because we heard so much about this place. Yes, nice plates, interesting presentation, but please let's put a bit more food in the plates... after an appetizer, main course and dessert, we considered that we shouldn't be hungry again. Was nice to try, but overpriced.

Exquisite! We had the 3 course Spring maple menu with pairings, wine, beer and cider. Complex flavours. Satisfying and beautiful on the plate. Service team was impeccable, especially Alexandre. Have eaten in celebrity chef Chuck Hughes' restaurants. This is better. Go!

This beautiful restaurant is located in the Old Montreal area with high ceilings and large plate glass windows. The food was reasonably priced and high quality and the recommended wines were superb. I had the recommended 3 course set menu that featured local ingredients including maple syrup infused offerings. The meals were beautifully presented with delicate touches. The flavours were... Went to 400 coups last year and had the Degustation with wine pairing which was fantastic. This time we decided to go with Appetizers & a main course. I had the Buffalo milk mozzarella which was good and my husband had the Veal tartar which he loved! As a meal I had the Guinea fowl breast which was way better... More

I hadn’t doubted Les 400 Coups would be good, but it turned out to be excellent. The tasting menu showed what the chef could do, and the chef could do plenty! Each course led beautifully to the next, culminating in the most tender pork cheek I could imagine, and ending with delightful 3-flavor desserts. The wait staff were attentive and... More

Simple, fresh food which is also deceptively-complex. The pork cheeks were to die for. One of the best meals I've ever had. Service and ambience equal the food. It's a charmer

It was serendipitous that we ate at this exceptional restaurant. We walked back from the Latin Quarter and chanced upon the host setting up for the evening. It being a Saturday night, I didn't think they'd have an open table, but he was so accommodating and penciled us in for 9:30. The decor is industrial modern and very tasteful. Every... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
