Service hit and miss, but food is good

Went here on the recommendation of a friend. Was quite easy to get a table, but would help to book on busy periods. The service was very down to earth if a little haphazard; all done with a charm and a smile. The food was really quite good from the bread to the oysters and especially the ribs... read more

In a recent visit to Montreal I visited l'original due to the overpowering recommendation from my partner. part of the trip was to experience this place that he enjoys on every visit. I was so impressed as we ascended the steps to a small Old Town delight. Warm and woodsy interior the sights and smells were inviting. We had reservations... More

I don't have an adventurous palate, however, this place was right up my boyfriend's alley. The decor was very nice & modern cottage-like style. Like most restaurants this type, not too many seats and they get busy fast so best to make a reservation if you're a party larger than 2. We sat at the bar and the manager, Mike,... More

The menu changes daily. Not a huge selection, but we had options of scallops, steak frites and a venison chop for 2. Each dish was beautifully prepared and delicious. Would go here again on my next trip to Montreal.

We had been to this restaurant several years ago for a New Years Brunch and had a wonderful experience. This is why we chose to try dinner here. The space is great - comfortable and modern. We made reservations but arrived early and were seated right away. We ordered a few glasses of wine. My husband's wine was definitely bad,... More

Great location and ambiance, staff was friendly, and dependably good cuisine. They could benefit by turning down or turning off the rock music though.

We had a great time here! The food was delicious and very original. Not the kinds of things you usually find on a menu. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. She recommended a few dishes that were incredible! Highly recommended

My husband and I went for dinner about 8 pm on a Friday evening. Our reservation did not appear through open table but the staff were very accommodating and found us a table. We ordered an appetizer which came fairly quickly. We waited a further 90 plus minutes and asked for the check as we were not prepared to wait... More

"Canadian food". Don't expect chicken or hamburgers. Lots of game meats. I had the Artic Char which was delicious in a sauce of wine, bacon, onions (similar to mussels in white sauce). The Foie Gras was amazing; something I might not otherwise eat.

When visiting Montreal for work, I usually stay in Laval, but after experiencing L'Orignal, I will have to book my room in old Montreal to be close to what is now my favourite restaurant. The food is awesome, fresh, well made and delicious. Michael and his staff were amazing, and the night was incredible. Great food, and ambiance, and music.... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
