Service hit and miss, but food is good

Went here on the recommendation of a friend. Was quite easy to get a table, but would help to book on busy periods. The service was very down to earth if a little haphazard; all done with a charm and a smile. The food was really quite good from the bread to the oysters and especially the ribs... read more

We had a great time here! The food was delicious and very original. Not the kinds of things you usually find on a menu. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. She recommended a few dishes that were incredible! Highly recommended

My husband and I went for dinner about 8 pm on a Friday evening. Our reservation did not appear through open table but the staff were very accommodating and found us a table. We ordered an appetizer which came fairly quickly. We waited a further 90 plus minutes and asked for the check as we were not prepared to wait... More

"Canadian food". Don't expect chicken or hamburgers. Lots of game meats. I had the Artic Char which was delicious in a sauce of wine, bacon, onions (similar to mussels in white sauce). The Foie Gras was amazing; something I might not otherwise eat.

When visiting Montreal for work, I usually stay in Laval, but after experiencing L'Orignal, I will have to book my room in old Montreal to be close to what is now my favourite restaurant. The food is awesome, fresh, well made and delicious. Michael and his staff were amazing, and the night was incredible. Great food, and ambiance, and music.... More

In a nutshell, this was one of the best meals I have had in quite some time. The chef decided that we wanted a form of the tasting menu, which was a great idea, around seven courses of deliciousness, from a charcuterie, to cured bison, to steamed cod with a salt encrusted skin, to delicious deserts. I can’t remember everything... More

This is my favorite restaurant in Montreal. Last time I went (last year), their menu was primarily sharing items which was great, because you could try all kinds of things. The sharing menu is no more, but the good news is that the food is still just as good. This is a meat lover's paradise. I had rabbit, but tried... More

While visiting Montreal we chose L'Orignal for it's menu of wild game. We had the venison tartar and smoked bone marrow for starters, the quail and venison chop as entrees. Caroline was very nice and attentive. The presentation and flavors were perfect. The only complaint I had was my quail came out closer to lukewarm, but aside from that we... More

We stumbled upon this restaurant quite by accident. We were walking back from a trip up the mountain heading back to the cathedral when it started to rain. It was around dinner time so we started looking for a place to eat and get out of the rain. After passing a few places that didn't spark our interest we found... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
