Had a good time with friends in a nice ambiance!

Wild game was great! We went there with friend couples so had a bunch of stuff incl. wild boar (was excellent!), oysters from PEI, beef & salmon tartares were nice, duck and a few other things. It was a very "festive feast" and we had a good time.Located in Old Montreal we loved the place. Service... read more

Old Montreal has a memorable gem in L'Original. We went due to the great reviews -- and get to add our own. They specialize in game/meats, but half our party went for their great fish entree. The venison tartar was so awesome that our teenage son opted for a second plate for his dessert (versus the wonderful traditional sweet offerings... More

We went here after coming across the menu when the restaurant was closed. We came back for dinner after reading reviews and deciding that the place had what we might be able to consider Canadian cuisine with a twist. It sounded exactly up our alley. When all was said and done we were simply underwhelmed. The food was in fact... More

Really enjoyed L'Orignal - the menu changes almost every day depending what they can get, and they have a good variety for everyone. As a vegetarian i had a good choice of a gamey/mushroom pasta dish, fish, among others. Other people i was with had rabbit and said short of the rabbit they had in Paris, it was the best... More

Food is ok, but the service was awful. also, they are known for such great wild game and didnt even have much of it on the menu, my friend was looking forward to wild boar and they didnt offer it anymore. we were told we had to leave the table after having ordered dessert - so they essetnailly waited for... We were looking forward to our experience at l'orignal. Unfortunately it did not turn out to be what we expected. The room is quite cozy and elegant with a chalet motif, but the waitress did not make us feel particularly welcome, and we never saw her again after she brought the wine and took our order. One of the item... More

Aside from the staff being super friendly and very hands on... the food was fantastic. Quaint little place on a lil side street named Saint Alexis (right on the corner of Notre Dame). Some interesting wild game plates and plenty to drink at the bar. Enjoy it if you love meat.

Had brunch here with the family on a Saturday. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. Kids loved the pancakes and double-baked Mac and cheese. We had salads and they were delicious! Music was great too!

In a recent visit to Montreal I visited l'original due to the overpowering recommendation from my partner. part of the trip was to experience this place that he enjoys on every visit. I was so impressed as we ascended the steps to a small Old Town delight. Warm and woodsy interior the sights and smells were inviting. We had reservations... More

I don't have an adventurous palate, however, this place was right up my boyfriend's alley. The decor was very nice & modern cottage-like style. Like most restaurants this type, not too many seats and they get busy fast so best to make a reservation if you're a party larger than 2. We sat at the bar and the manager, Mike,... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
