A Mexican gem on the Danforth

I did not expect this restaurant to be that authentic and pleasant to dine in Service is slow but the food is so good and the portion is huge. Guacamole is a must with nachos as a starter. They have souvenir shop and wall full of antique and mexican novelties.

First of all - DO NOT go to El Sol if you are in a hurry. Service is slow, and you will get frustrated. Better to chose an evening when you have nothing else planned, then you can relax, enjoy a Mexican beer, and anticipate the great food. The food is good, and it seemed pretty authentic to me (not... Have eaten here many ties for years. Wanted to give an updated review. Nothing has changed, which is a very good thing! Food consistently high quality - fresh, as sit down or to take away. I highy recommend the meat or vegetarian platters to share for 2 people. Some people call it el-slow but I prefer waiting for quality food,... More

My husband and I love going to El Sol as it reminds us of a little restaurant we ate at on our honeymoon in Mexico. Be prepared that it takes a while to get your meal, so don't go if you're in a rush. Go when you have the time to sit and enjoy some guacamole and a cerveza as... More

I visited El Sol last night with my boyfriend to grab a couple margaritas and a combo platter. Upon entering, you feel like you're transported to Mexico. The walls are covered with colourful suns, masks, and traditional Mexican art. We had a seat and were greeted by a man who gave us a couple of menus and some water. There... More

Went to El Sol. This is a Mexican Restaurant that I overheard the waiter say had been around for 18 years. Located at Danforth near Coxwell, we spent a few minutes searching for parking on the Saturday night. Inside the decor is fun and a bit kitschy. We started with salsa and guacamole which are home-made. The waiter provided us... More

My wife and I tried the "sample platter" because we didn't know what to try. It was more than enough food for two people at a reasonable price. I'm not an expert on Mexican food and don't know how authentic it is but all of the items were delicious. I would have liked to give this place 5 stars but... More

My fourth trip here today and every time has been wonderful. AUTHENTIC!!! Care is taken with every dish and I have nothing but praise for everything from ambience, service and quality. If forced to file a complaint it would be that the kitchen is deliberate in delivering your order. I suggest you order a margarita while waiting or ask when... More

I really like this restaurant and the Mole chicken is superb. I have never been disappointed. I really like Mexican food and have had many of the regional dishes from my extensive travel to different parts of the country. The service is a bit on the slow side and adds new meaning to the term "mañana." However, to be said... More

This is one of the older authentic Mexican restaurants in Toronto. An easy way to know it's not Tex Mex is to look for sour cream -- there's none, because rich dairy is not a staple of non-North American/European cuisine, probably as much because of the climate as because of concern about dietary fat. Having said that (not that I... More

Staying in East End

Neighborhood Profile
East End
The East End is an eclectic amalgamation of areas that team up to make this district one of the most multi-faceted and alluring. Home to Toronto's LGBT community hub, Gay Village is alive and pumping day or night with friendly bars, nightclubs, and cafes – its thumb is on the pulse of excitement. For a more relaxed day, the East End has the largest collection of restored Victorian homes, and its stately streets, tree-lined and bursting at the seams with affluence, often sport farmers markets and street artists, epitomized by the effusive St. Lawrence Market. One of the most gorgeous of Toronto's neighborhoods, it also straddles Lake Ontario in an area called The Beach, where you'll find folks cycling and strolling along the sandy shorelines, getting some sun or enjoying shopping, dining, and pub options. For some fabulous food, the vivacious personalities running the restaurants in the East End's Greektown is only equaled by the fun and authenticity of the street stalls and restaurants at its expansive Indian Bazaar. 'Something for everyone' has never been so accurate.
