Amazingly tasty food

This place is not for everybody because the style is loud and vocal, very communal feel. But food is good with interesting variety. Have to order many dishes since small portion so they add up. Nice experience.

The closest authentic Izakaya experience you can get in Toronto. If you enjoy this kind of lively loud atmosphere, you'll love it. If not you'll hate it. Good food good beer good atmosphere.

This tapas style bar/pub is a interesting place for a dinner with friends. If you want to have a conversation get a table outside (weather permitting). Every time guests enter or depart all staff yells. It is fun the first few times, but is get old and distracting very quickly. For a nice conversation with friends, sit outside. This all... More

My wife and I went this past Friday. After being greeted loudly and cheerfully, as is the style at an izakaya, we were seated outside on the patio. The restaurant was reasonably busy but not overly so. Our waitress on the other hand could care less that we were there. After taking our drink orders she completely forgot about us... More

We came here with an experienced Japanese chef, and we left very disappointed. The place is extremely loud and uncomfortable - the staff keeps yelling all the time, we cannot even hear each other talking. We left with an headache. The food is terrible, it is an insult to Japanese cuisine: everything is overcooked and not refined at all. We... More

Great atmosphere, created by the awesome team at Guu. A cheery welcome is afforded to everyone walking through the doors. Drinks list is extensive, as would be expected at any izakaya. The highlight is the food; amazing dishes throughout the menu. A particular highlight was the botan ebi shrimp, a special on only a few nights that I have been... More

Just like everyone says it's very loud! I enjoyed the different environment. It was cold out and they had a heated patio where you could wait because line ups are pretty long. We decided to wait in the car. Good thing we went back to the car because we realized we parked on a small street in which its permit... More

We went here after seeing the great reviews online. I like the idea of the small portions of different styles of food (I guess tapas-style food). We asked the waitress for recommendations as we had no idea how much we needed to order, nor what to order given the vast amount of options they offer. She told us which dishes... More

Returned for a quick bite to eat last week and I forgot how in-your-face loud it is. It's for an experience but it will never be a relaxing bite to eat. The food was hit or miss - the first 3 dishes were stellar and the last 3 left something to be desired. Word of advice would be to remember... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighborhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
