John & Sons Oyster House - Downtown is out of the way from the hustle and bustle of the financial core but at the same time right in the middle of it, hidden away. From ducking down our little street, you feel as though you are doing something deliciously wicked. When you walk in the door of our 40 seat joint, you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon the best speakeasy in town and you’re getting away with flouting all the rules while everyone else behaves. You may think you’ll only have a few oysters and a quick drink while you’re there, but everything around you conspires to make you want to stay longer. Our fare varies according to the time of year, coastal fishing quotas and weather conditions. We can always shuck to order from a selection of 5-10 different Oysters daily, drawn from both our own beds in P.E.I. and the best growers in Canada, the USA and further abroad.

When we first landed in Toronto, John and Sons was recommended. The oysters I had here were great. After the oysters, I had the lobster roll, which had too much mayo and no seasoning. The roll itself was good. But was the size of a hotdog bun (whatever happemed to the hoogie roll.) My wife had the haddock fish plate... More

I had the opportunity to try John & Son's as it was one of many restaurants listed in Summerlicious. We chose this destination as the summerlicious menu was quite broad and would give everyone the opportunity to try something fresh from the sea. The food was quite sophisticated, presented lovely, and the service and staff was beyond friendly. I definitely... More

We like to sit at the bar. This way you have a good view at the oysters opener. Oysters are very good. Ambiance and service is perfect.

Main dishes and oysters were delicious. Our server was very attentive and knowledgable about the oysters. Only thing is we wanted to order dessert, but they ran out.

This is a really great restaurant in Toronto which deserves so much more recognition. Whilst I found the menu to be limited in choice, I have to say the food was very, very good. The oysters in particular, were just fantastic and we felt the need to order another platter before our main arrived. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive... More

My Lord those smelts have unbelievable aroma and even better taste. Had 7 different oysters combined with great service. All Toronto visitors and locals need to drop in here for a real treat. Don't order the crispy fish and chips cause you will become addicted

I love seafood and if you do too I would strongly recommend. From the bisque to the main entree I was not disappointed and my husband isn till talking about it. A bit expensive for a regular jaunt but great from time to time.

After travelling extensively, I am always trying to find a cool little spot, where locals go. It's hard to find these places but this is the place. If you are staying downtown Toronto and want a vibrant little joint with friendly staff, this is the place and fresh food.

Visited this restaurant by chance and will definitely return. The oysters selection was vast and each variety tasted better than the next. Super size on many. Bartender went out of his way to educate us. Tuna tartare can't be beat. We will definitely return to this local Toronto establishment. Next visit - the fish and chips which I hear, are... More

Staying in Downtown West

Neighborhood Profile
Downtown West
Downtown West is home to Toronto's gorgeous Inner Harbor, and is a must-visit for lovers of art and the outdoors. The area's rich cultural heritage is celebrated by a number of monuments and museums, giving the neighborhood a mature feel. As a premier destination for modern art, people here stroll through the cool contemporary pieces at the Power Plant, enjoy the outdoor installations along Queen's Quay and Canoe Landing, and picnic among the zany designs of the Toronto Music Garden. The waterfront itself is often suffused with bikers and joggers, and the harbor is always packed with classic ships with masts raised. The vintage boats and ferries to the Toronto Islands make for a charming contrast against Downtown West's backdrop of skyscrapers, condos, and food trucks serving up hot, fresh fare to locals on the go. The area has a peaceful energy, and is popular with tourists and Torontonians alike.
