quality food

As usual the food is very good and there are a lot of Finnish options. The prices are quite reasonable. The restaurant is very short staffed and the wait times are very long. It is worth the wait if you have lots of time on your hands. Definitely not the place to go to dine and dash.

The food really wasn't very good. The Finn pancakes have a formidable reputation but neither my wife nor I finished our plates; they were edible but don't rate any higher than that. Our server was inattentive. The decor seems to come out of the 1960's, and it's had a tough 50 years. I wouldn't go again, I wouldn't recommend it,... More

I expected more from the Hoito based on all the hype it receives in the media. Breakfast was ok. My poached eggs were undercooked and I couldn't eat them. Coffee was lukewarm in very small cups, toast was cold. Those of my group who ordered the Finish pancakes seemed to like them though.

The food was great and very good service from a very friendly, helpful server. Loved the very thin pancakes.

The friend we were travelling recommend Hoito as a restaurant not to miss. Without a doubt the best pancakes I have ever had. Great atmosphere as well, certainly a must place to try.

You're not going to the Hoito for fine dining; no you're coming here for the best pancakes you've ever had in your life! It's in a basement of an old hall and there is almost always a huge line up for breakfast... but aside from that there isn't many bad things you could say! Lots of genuine Finnish options that... We were recommended to visit this restaurant by some friends who live in Thunder Bay - they said it was a place for a great breakfast and a unique Thunder Bay experience. We ate here on a Tuesday morning - it wasn't overly busy, our waitress was amazing - very attentive to details - and we had a good meal... More

Four of us went for breakfast, and didn't have to wait for a table. (As we left, the line for a table was several people long, reaching to the front door, so it may pay to go early to this popular spot) The Finnish pancakes, much like crepes, were quite excellent, and the Hoito wait staff will provide your table... The Hoito, as Wikepedia will tell you "has operated continuously on 314 Bay Street, in the Finnish quarter, for 91 years and is perhaps the oldest co-operatively owned and operated restaurant in Canada". The name means "care" as in taking care of you--and the friendly staff does that in an efficient, kindly, and generous way. The decor is functional; you... More
