After several days in Niagara on the Lake I had almost over-dosed on vertical food and overly fancy food. Just when I could not stand the thought of foie gras blended with cream to produce a ganache, or or a soup with sorbet, or lamb boiled in fat to produce, well, I don't know what they were thinking (!), the... In oure view this is the best of a pretty good lot. The gazpacho was excellent, the salad with procuitto (sp) very fine and delicious and the beef tenderoin was tender, tasty and prepared as ordered. The fish was fresh and cooked to perfection. Although tehe desert menu was paltry that did not detract from the total experience. The only... More

The menu was extensive and interesting, the food delicious, and the service excellent. Our dinner was I rushed and served in a beautiful dining room.

We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation time and told the waiter that we had theatre tickets. He assured us that there was no problem. However the delay between courses was extreme, "highlighted" by more than a 20 minute hiatus between removing the salad plates and bringing the main course. We ultimately had to decline coffee and dessert. While the... More

An exceptional meal at a reasonable rate considering the setting and quality of food. This is highly recommended during any stay. Not overly impressed with our server...however did observe other servers to be providing much closer attention to their diners.

My husband and I and another couple came here this past weekend for dinner. WOW best describes everything from the food to the service. When I made the reservation online I put in the comments that we would like to sit outside and that we were celebrating an anniversary and a birthday. I didn't expect them to remember because most... We had eaten at this restaurant in the past, but oh, my, have things upgraded. Prices, too, but the food was exquisite. The 4 of us had Ontario pork, Ontario beef, sous vide chicken, and salmon--all stupendous. Appetizers were inventive, too. Gazpacho with basil sorbet, mushroom salad. All local stuff. And great wine list. Creme brulee and cheese plate were... More

Beautiful, white, rambling, old, turn of the century home, converted into an Inn and restaurant; situated directly on Queen Street (the main street through town) in gorgeous Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Charles Inn is at the end of the Queen Street shopping district, situated beside the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club. The dining room and the out door patio face Queen Street, perfect for... More

We went as a family of four to celebrate a reunion and chose The Charles Restaurant based on the generally strong online reviews. When we arrived for a mid-week lunch, there was only one other small group at a nearby table. In hindsight, the few patrons should have been a first indication that this might not have been a good... As a threshold matter, we were seated in a dark corner in the middle of the restaurant, literally right next to the service stand where they set aside used dishware and decanted wine. Ten minutes in, we noticed some dark specks on the wall next to us. Turns out it was about half a dozen fly-type insects (see picture). Gross.... More
