I took a party of five to Bacalao this evening. The food was excellent, the wine was good, and the service was good EXCEPT that the servers ignored my wife! I have no idea why - she is quiet and reserved - but I did not appreciate it. Keep my wife happy and I will be happy. Anyway, we all... More

Nice ambience, good service and great food! A must visit if you enjoy fine dining. Would have gone back every night if it weren't for the fact that we had to be reasonable with our expenses, but absolutely worth every penny.

We decided to try this restaurant for a special birthday dinner but, We were very disappointed. After arriving on time for our reservation, we were told our table was not ready and we were led down the hall and told to sit and review the menu until someone came back for us. We did as we were told but we... More

Thank you for posting such a lovely photo of Bev, one of the hardest-working people at Bacalao. Most often in the restaurant industry, one sees men in the dish washing position, mainly for the strength needed to hoist trays of dishes and large pots but Bev has taken on the challenge with poise and aplomb and does a marvelous job.... The restaurant is in a wonderful house located just a little outside down town. This was our first restaurant experience in St. John’s and I'm glad we came here. I love how the restaurant is in a house! The server was helpful and the food was good. We had brunch there and ordered the seafood chowder that was fresh and... More

We had the pleasure of eating at Bacaloa this past June while visiting St. John's. We got there late on a Sunday without a reservation and got pleasantly seated even though they were quite busy. My husband ordered a scallop appetizer and cod main. I had the butter poached lobster. It was one of the best lobster dishes I've ever... More

Our party of two adults and a 10-year-old stumbled into Bacalao unsure of our choice, but were left dazzled by the quality of the meal and grateful for the exceptional service. Thank you!

This was a truly inspired meal fusing together Basque and Newfoundland traditions. I had the salt cod and cured pork belly and can truly say it was the best salt cod and maybe even some of the best seafood I've ever eaten. Had to have the cods tongues as a starter of course and they were superbly done, fried in... More

This is a fine restaurant with a menu that is packed with the best dishes Newfoundland has to offer. Here you will find fish, meats, soups and vegetables prepared as you may never have had them before. First there was an "amuse" that was in my wife's opinion the best free dish she has ever tasted. Then there is the... More

New Orleans and Montreal are the only two cities in North America with consistently fine cuisine. Bacalao in St-Johns is worthy of note! They know their wines and are able to recommend perfect pairings to their meals. Awesome food and great service too.

I live in the UK, and have never enjoyed cod. I thought that if I was going to ever enjoy this fish, then a top-rated restaurant in Newfoundland ought to be able to deliver - and did it deliver! I had the locally-caught cod, which was perfect; huge flakes of melting texture. We also had the pork belly with salt... More
