The food and service was high class and deserving of a return! I won't go on about the experience, but I will comment on the owners' investment. They are very much a part of the community and have taken every opportunity to support local everything. The fact that Andrea takes time to check these reviews, take comments and suggestions into... Wow! You made us cry! Thank you so much for the lovely review. We are completely committed to bringing to St. John's - and the world - the best of what our province has to offer. Rumours about the restaurant biz being hard work and long hours are true, but we can't imagine doing anything else. Reviews like yours make... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Bacalao. Our waiter, Kenny, was very knowledgable about the menu and was a gracious host. Our food was excellent, but for the one minor complaint that my wife thought her cod was a touch overdone. Other than that, we would definitely return here and highly recommend this restaurant

We dined here with friends from the area & really enjoyed the whole experience including the quality of the food & wine , atmosphere & the great service. The food has been described as being "Newfoundland with a twist" & that's pretty much what it was including great dishes such as Fliipper Pie , Moose & Lobster. You can tell... More

Had lunch with friends, had the croquet misses - a ham and cheese sandwich on locally made bread dipped in egg and fried...with a great creamy chowder with large chunks of fresh seafood. Others had more local NL fare... Nice atmosphere and friendly and competent service... Would recommend for groups and friends.

Ate here twice this past summer and thoroughly enjoyed both meals. If you have had one too many fish and chips during cod season and are looking for something a bit more upscale this is the place to try. Nice selection of Canadian wines.

I visited Bacalao for brunch as a group of 9. The food was good, but we found the service to be poor. After we placed our orders and received our drinks, we didn't see our server again until the food was ready (about 30 minutes). By that point we were in dire need of a coffee refill but the server... Thank you for taking the time to write. I am happy to hear that you all enjoyed your meals. I am sorry we fell short on the service. I have spoken to your server, who expresses her apologies for any shortcomings. We do our best to schedule staff based on reservations and our best guess of walk-ins... our experience over... More

Had dinner there a few weeks ago. Food and service is good but can't understand this being the highest rated restaurant in St Johns. My biggest complaint in ambience. Was given a table for 2 in a small back room with another couple a foot or two away from us. Could hear every word they were speaking which really put... More

I am thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the food and service! Regarding your table placement - if you had asked your server, we would have been happy to move you to a table that suited you better. We have learned we can't predict which spot different guests prefer... some love a corner, some love a fireplace or window -... More

We dined at the Bacalao last night, the food was delicious but I firmly believe $12 for a glass of wine is over the top, it was just ordinary wine, no special order.

We are happy to hear you enjoyed your meal. Regarding wine, we maintain our regular and specialty wine lists, and offer 13 wines by the glass, ranging from $8 to $12, including 5 reds, 4 whites plus dessert wines. In addition we offer 3 ports by the glass. Our glass pour is a generous 6 ounces, larger than industry standard... More

I went here with my parents and grandmother for brunch a few weekends ago. I had heard from some friends that they served a really good brunch, and I was not disappointed! The food was very fresh with a creative twist off traditional Newfoundland food. Even my grandmother raved about the place, and she is the pickiest eater I know!... More
