The owner of this place is quite the character, and definitely part of the draw for people. All four of us had the prix fixe dinner and everything was outstanding, including the wine pairings, each of which was carefully described along with each course as presented. Duck, rabbit, lamb, and fish--it was all wonderful. Service was provided at a reasonable... More

It had been almost 28 years since my wife and I last dined at this restaurant and the reason is that we seldom visit Victoria anymore. That being stated, this restaurant will bring us back to the city on a more regular basis as it is an absolute treat. The owner, who acted as the interpreter of the menu, is... More

My wife and I went to Matisse on our first trip to Victoria, and now we go there every year. The restaurant is very small and intimate. The owner greets us each time, and, though we only go there once per year, he recognized us since our second visit and welcomes us back each time. The owner and employees clearly... More

If you love French food then go here. The owner is very hands on, seats you and has a wonderful sense of humor. The menu is seasonal so very fresh. It is a small restaurant so reservations are advised. Portions are perfect size. I only saw 3 staff in restaurant and they all managed to be attentive to everyone in... More

Thank You Gamayrouse for your kind comments, yes we are 3 but the most important 3 are in the kitchen, they are the ones that make the restaurant shine. Have a great day and see you next time you are in Victoria John @ Matisse More

Tonight is the 3rd time we visit that restaurant. Each time we come back, it is always a pleasure. Without a doubt, this is the best restaurant in Victoria. If you're looking for fried cooking, forget about it because there is none. Instead, the Owner is going to come and present you his menu with a few jokes. And he'll... More

I have been to France and some of the best French restaurants in Paris. The food here is just as good or better. We had the wine pairing pre fix menu. The wines were good, and the halibut and salmon were fantastic. We also had a wonderful lobster bisque. My only suggestion is that the butter on the bread pudding... More

I joined my husband on a business trip to Victoria recently. A few trips ago, he had told me about a lovely restaurant he found that had an unbelievably good cheese soufflé. We decided to try it together! First of all, Victoria is a lovely city with an “old personality.” Matisse certainly maintains that feeling. As you walk in the... More

I was traveling alone, and I dined here. The prix fixe menu was superb. There are four course (soup, appetizer, main course, dessert) with many options to choose from. I had the soup of the day (a leek and potato soup with smoked oysters), a wild mushroom crepe, grilled sea bass, and an amazing creme brulee. I also asked for... More

We were excited and looking forward to a fine French Restaurant dining experience, but were sadly disappointed with this restaurant. I can say that the service was friendly and good, however the atmosphere was a bit loud and unassuming due to its small size and location, and the food quite average. My wife and I sampled a large portion of... More

Small, charming...and delicious!! My wife and I had the prix fixe menu with the wine pairings. My meal was delicious, but hers was even better. She chose ad a full-flavored lobster bisque, and her wild mushroom crepe simultaneously creamy and pungent. The highlight of my meal was the smoked sablefish, which had a bold but not overpowering smoky flavor but... More
