Welcome to Jambo Grill. "Jambo” is Swahili, East African word, meaning hello. “Paan” is a betal leaf wraped with sweets & nuts. The dishes at Jambo Grill are Khoja style cooking, which is quite different from other Indian style dishes. Khoja’s, followers of the Ismaili Branch of Shia sect of Islam, our forefathers in India, were converted to Islam by the Dais from Iran. Thus, there is a strong Persian & Gujarati influence evident in our cooking. The Tandoor, a deep clay oven is one of the key elements in cooking these dishes, like Chicken Tikka, Kebabs & Naan bread whick cooks on the walls of the tandoor. Around the 1920s, the Khoja’s settled in large numbers in East Africa before immigrating to Canada in the 1970s. Certain African style dishes such as Cassava & Tilapia Fish are influences from that continent. Also cooking on the Grill (Sigdi) was very common in East Africa. Dishes like Mishkaki & Kuku Choma are prepared in this manner. At Jambo Grill we present you with the tastes of four continents, Iran, India, Africa, & Canada which we now call home. Our ingredients, tastes, & style of cooking are influenced by each of these unique places. Our Symbol Shaped like a betal leaf & the flame of a tandoor oven, on top of our naan bread, with paan leafs falling into a jar of sweet syrup.Voted Vancouver's Best East African and Indian Cuisine & Restaurant in Vancouver.

Super tasty!

We came in at around 6:30 and the place was packed. We were able to get seated right away and ordered within 10 minutes but it took a long time to get our food - in large part due to a party of about 20-30 that had ordered just before us. Fortunately, I thought the food was worth the wait.... read more

This isn't your Main Street Indian. This is Indian/African fusion. We grew up in East Africa and this is exactly the kind of Indian food we ate: grilled meat, grilled chicken, kabobs, beef samosas, fish curry, chicken curry. When we need a fix of Indian food (I'm too lazy to cook it at home), we come here. We also order... More

My wife and I bring our family here on a regular basis. We love the jungle ribs and the cassava fries, we are both from East Africa and the food reminds us of home. The service is always excellent, the staff really make us feel at home.

Went on a Wednesday evening, the place was a good busy but we got a table immediately. Waiter came across and put down water and took drink request, explained some items on the menu. Shared various dishes of lamb, fish, vegetables and a few starters. All served quickly - dishes were hot, good portions and well spiced. All in all... More

Yesterday I was invited by a friend for dinner. We went to "Jambo Grill", a restaurant on Kingsway near Joyce Street that offers Indian and African food. Despite directly on the Kingsway it was a bit hidden that we first passed it with the car without seeing it. The interior design was very nice. They offer a wide selection of... More

Very authentic East African food with an Indian flare. Sharing the Indian Ocean, it is very common to find people of Indian descent in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda). It's no surprise that the food of that part of the world has taken on characteristics of India. The mandazi (cakey donut) brought me right back to memories of our... More

Love love love... A small and cozy very authentic African Indian restaurant. Great service. Love seeing the owners in the kitchen and in the dining room. They seem to know all the regular customers. The food is to die for!!! I have dreams about the chicken lollipops.. The ribs are outstanding. All dishes are amazing and the kids love the... More

Extremely poor service... Took our order but did not bring tea that we ordered ... Made a lame excuse about city shutting if the water . Brought our snacks, no cutlery, no napkins... Food quality average at best ... No value for money here

A girl from work kept telling me that her husband and her absolutely love this place called Jambo Grill, so when it was time for hubby and I to choose somewhere different to go on date night, this restaurant came to mind. Let me tell you, we were NOT disappointed! The food was fantastic. We had chicken lolli pops and... More

This was and awesome restaurant I recently visited with my colleagues. Although, it was quite far from my office if one is walking and that too during office hours. But my friends want to have their lunch here. So this was my first visit. By entering, we were impressed to see the ambiance, their menu card, the improvisation in their... More
