good southern Indian food

We went for Dine Out 2016. It also was near to our condo. My wife had the cauliflower appetizer and I had the meen puttu - a sea bass, chilies and grain. The mains were lamb and a fish curry. Both good. For dessert gulab jamun and mango ice cream - both very tasty and cooling. Service was good.

Without any pretense, this humble restaurant makes every effort to be true to the flavours of Southern India. While not a fine dining establishment, it is very relaxed and cozy and the staff are dressed in colourful Indian Style saree so the authenticity begins with your serving staff whom are all very friendly and helpful. The menu contains many classic... More

On the spur of the moment, and after having passed this place on the bus many times, we decided to visit them for some take-out food recently. After several recommendations from the waiter we chose our curries and headed home with them. The curries were nice, as was the bread we ordered as a side (the closest to naan they... More

Dropped by here for a late, light lunch. It was very quiet, being the middle hours between lunch and supper, but the staff were friendly and helpful and the food still arrived quite promptly. The food was delicious, and reminded my partner of Mamak Malaysian-Indian food. The whole meal, plus drinks, was under $40, which was very fair for the... More

Next time you have a craving for chutney villa i would advise you to go around back and have a peak through the kitchen door at the conditions back there. Its downright horrifying! Like Kitchen Nightmares bad! I will never eat there again. Damage has been done. I am mortified.

I especially love South Indian food, which tends to be mainly vegetarian where I typically eat. But South Indian isn't very common here so I was happy to be introduced. My weakness is (are?) idlis, mainly as a delivery system for coconut chutney and they have both here but I wasn't able to test the idlis, although I will note... More

Unique South Indian dishes made very tasty. South Indian coffee was a great hit with our family. Chick peas and coconut dish for an appetizer was very good. I recommend the "thali" instead of dosa. Masala utappam was also very good. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who would like to taste some good South Indian food.

This was an interesting change from the usual Northern Indian cuisine that is more common in the lower mainland. It is a small restaurant that seems like you might be entering a convenience store from the outside but its very clean and pleasant inside. Despite some of the reviews we had very good service and both servers were friendly and... More

It makes me really sad to have to write this negative review. I decided to do Dine Out again here since we had such a good experience last year. I made reservations for 7 people. The waitress was the only person working the whole restaurant (she was great despite how busy she was and the fact that at one point... More

We've eaten several times at Chutney Villa with friends. All of us have found the food to be excellent. The New York Times review of Vancouver's Indian restaurants said that this surprisingly good restaurant "takes on the flavors of South India with an unstudied exuberance " and a wonderful combination of spices and textures that - in at least one... Staying in South Main

Neighborhood Profile
South Main
South Main, or SoMa, is a neighbourhood in upswing. Inhabited by young humanitarian professionals in converted lofts and studio apartments, what was once an industrial centre is now a wellspring of vintage and eco fashion shops, contemporary sawdust-floor galleries, craft beer joints, and basement acting studios. All set to an Art Deco background with a strong blue collar sensibility underpinning each new pop-up and foodie trend, SoMa is on the rise.
