Unexpected Gem in a Very Little Italy

While in town for a few days on business, our hosts took us to this neighborhood gem near their studio in Vancouver’s Little Italy. (Very little—it appears to be a handful of restaurants and shops spread out over a few blocks). It was perfect, a fantastic meal in a cozy mood-lit little spot, a... read more

Found Arriva on the open table app and it was sensational. When we arrived the place was buzzing. Lots of people, but we had reservations and we were seated immediately. Service was warm knowledgeable and friendly .We decided to have the beef Carpaccio - meat very tender, Parmiggiano, oil & lemon. Clean flavors- and a strong cheese here made this... More

Since it was Dine-In week, we thought to try a new restaurant, and it never entered our minds it was a $40/pp 3-course meal, which we would never have chosen. It is not a 5-star rating. The price was not on their special menu nor were we told by the (friendly) staff. The salad was soggy, but the trout and... More

Had a reservation for a family dinner on the Saturday before Christmas and were glad we reserved. A wonderful place with excellent, attentive and pleasant staff. Food was exceptionally good. We were in Italy in October and the meal at the Arriva rivaled those we had there. The frozen lemon stuffed with gelato for dessert should not be missed.

Went to the restaurant without a reservation on a Wednesday evening with my daughter. We were seated immediately and were given a basket of focaccia bread with oil & balsamic for dipping while we looked at the menu. For an appetizer we ordered the fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil. We could smell it as soon as the waiter got... More

Went to Arriva on a busy Friday night with no reservation. The place was full but the owner went out of his way to make sure the four of us got a table which we did within 20 minutes. We shared two antipasto plates which were full of fresh ingredients. Absolutely delicious! My wife had the grilled salmon which was... More

love the food there never disappointed. I had the cannelloni stuffed with ricotta and spinach with a rose sauce and the chicken soup with barley for a starter and hubby had the veal parmigiana with a side of gnocchi with Italian sausage instead of the spaghetti and of course ended the meal with a shared Tiramisu omg tasted like home.... Enjoyed a lovely lunch here accompanied with some good vino. Would like to comment that the Caesar salad was not great....expecting fabulous from this restaurant. Fettuccini carbonara was very delicious. Experience here great with an ok Caesar salad.

Other than the Antipasto which i thought was lacking the usually wide assortment of Meats and cheeses, the dinner was very good. Old time wine list, with labels, and prices written on them, sometime tough to see. Be better if they had more info on country, type of wine, etc. Had Veal Parmigiana which was good, my wife and our... More

95 minutes to entrée. 20 minutes at table before acknowledgement of any sort. That was the que so we ordered drinks appies and mains immediately on first visit from waiter. Thought that would mitigate future delays. Wow were we wrong. Zombie apocalypse slow. Angry slow. Then food that was, to be generous, competent. More accurately fighting to be average. Give... More

Staying in Commercial Drive

Neighborhood Profile
Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive, also called "The Drive," comprises of twelve sauntering blocks of modest and unfussy counter-culture. Straddling the line between sophisticated and unadorned, it is favoured by students, artists, writers, designers, and start-ups, and suffused throughout with a healthy off-beat counter-culture. The kind of neighbourhood which well-springs thought-revolutions and has the odd bit of self-aware graffiti, Commercial Drive has resisted gentrification in favor of continuing to build a thriving den of affordable multiculturalism. Once known as Vancouver's "Little Italy," it has also been the immigration point for Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Portuguese to the city. The resulting hodgepodge makes for poetry readings in espresso cafes, social debates in early-open bakeries, and eco-activism posters pinned up in the many multi-ethnic markets in the area. Commercial Drive is where you go to feel like a local, and if you have them, bring the kids – The Drive has a number of bookshops, toy stores, and attractions to get them involved too.
