Very good food, however went there as a couple to have a Saturday night dinner with my wife. Waitress takes my order of Gyoza for Appetizer, and Assorted Sashimi for main course and my wife has Sunonomo salad as Appetizer and Prawns with noodles as main course. My assorted sashimi comes out and I proceed to eat the dish (wondering... More

Authentic Japanese, fresh ingredients! I enjoyed the steamed veggies and rice with the tasty home made spicy mayo. Spring rolls, potato croquettes are crispy and delicious! All the staff are friendly and the service is excellent.

Small restaurant in the Old City with items that you don't normally find on the menu in Canada. Vegan friendly - they'll make the miso vegan (no bonito) if you ask, as well as having lots of other menu choices. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Best to arrive by 11:30 for lunch as it fills up fast.

This isn't your average Japanese joint. This is authentic Japanese food. Large menu with the staples and things you normally don't encounter. Place was packed when it opened for dinner at 5:00pm. That's always a good sign. I eat sushi almost every day and this place is better than most Japanese places in big cities.

This is a Japanese-run diner with authentic Japanese food. It is more of an Izakaya and although they serve good sushi, it is really a rather Izakaya restaurant where you order more or less "kaiseki" - one plate at a time (though their bento lunches are great and great value). The service is great. It is downtown and in an... More

To us who know quality authentic Japanese food, Bistro Taiyo was the place. However, the last dinner visit a month ago was not excellent as usual, but thought maybe it was just that evening. Today I dropped in for a sushi lunch. . The sushi rice was not fresh and seasoned as it should be. It was dry, crumbly, hardly... More

We are sorry for making you feel uncomfortable. And please let us explain why that happens about omelettes color. Our Japanese rolled omelettes(dashimaki tamago) are freshly made in the restaurant everyday. Sometimes you may see a gray color because dashi, soy sauce and eggs can have a chemical reaction caused by temperature. Because we make it fresh without any preservatives... More

I would say this is the best tasting sushi in nanaimo. It doesnt have the best atmosphere but the food is so good, I would choose this place over a "fancier" looking place any day. If you havent eaten here yet, you are missing out.

Nice izakaya in the old city quarter. Sushi prepared using proper ingredients and no substitutes. Green tea brewed perfectly. I'll definitely come back here

Taiyo is a great small sushi place with a very authentic feel. Run by a group of younger Japanese and often has quite a lively scene with VIU students.
