Saturday lunch - lovely

We took our parent here two weeks ago and had the most delicious lunch! The menu has quite a bit to choose from, it's known as a fish restaurant but there were some other options available. The mussels were delicious but were a massive portion for a starter, the cold seas food platter was huge too... read more

This was our 4th visit to Smith's and I have to say the most disappointing. It was on a very busy Saturday night and they might have had a bad night. We had a starters of fresh whole crab with a balsamic vinaigrette which although very tasty (bonus!) was not presented very elegantly. I appreciate this isn't a haute cuisine... More

I always have a great meal at Smiths of Ongar the staff are great and nothing is to much trouble . I have been coming to Smiths of Ongar on and off for the last 12 years and some. The staff are always polite, if a little reserved . And most of all the food is Always consistent.

Have just returned from another meal at Smiths, this was a Saturday lunch we booked for 12-30 to celebrate my mother's 94th birthday, arriving at 12-23 having got her out of the car we were amazed to find the door locked, the staff ignored us and due to her age and the weather had to sit her back in the... I have been coming to Smiths for over 20 years. Great for seafood and all round dining. Had lunch recently and food as always was excellent. But the miserable staff couldn't crack a smile between them. My wife and I both felt like intruders as they rushed us through our meal. If I owned this place I would sack the... More

We arrived from Cheshunt thanks to our college educated sat nav, only to be greeted by a stereotypical tipped his hat doorman, sort of cross between Mick McManus and Arthur Mullard, a charming man and the perfect choice for a bit of banter. Shown to our table we knew we were amongst ducking and diving royalty, this plaice was special,... More

The service and food, famous for fish, is excellent. Some tables for two are too close together. It is expensive and vegetables although excellent, are extra!
