El Matador is the finest restaurant in San Jose, owned by a former Matador, Pablo Velez. It boasts Mediterranean Mexican dining. It is in a neighborhood next to the Nun's Hospital. Their Scallopine Marsala is to die for as well as the other items on the menu. Please add this restaurant to your list. I can't imagine why it hasn't been on there as we have been eating there for at least 3 or 4 years.

While dining at El Matador is truly an event, having them provide chef services to your villa for a week is extraordinary! Coconut shrimp and shrimp cocktail are two of my favorites but Pablo has never prepared a bad meal. Their breakfast and dinner are always a sight to behold as they are about presentation as much as taste. Would... More

I've watched the development of Pablo Velez's restaurant over the last few years, from the off the street original outside dining area to the current walled garden main dining space of today. As the restaurant environment has improved, so has the food -.and that was pretty good to start with. Sen. Velez is a bullfighter of renown to which he... More

We took a trip to San Jose for their weekly art show and decided to dine at this wonderful restaurant. You enter a welcoming courtyard with a fountain and feel like you are truly on vacation. The owner, who is a true Matador, greets everyone at least once. We were lucky enough to be entertained with stories of his exploits... More

I had read about El Matador and we found it on our current trip. It is off the beaten track from the tourist district, in the open courtyard of the Matador's house, very beautifully decorated. The food is expensive. The Caesar salad is prepared fresh at your table and I highly recommend it with your meal.

I have a very mixed review of El Matador for my first visit. We were pleasantly greeted upon arrival and quickly seated. Our first drink order took a very long time to get someone to request the order and then after awhile they brought the drinks, both were not what we had ordered. This was later corrected. We ordered appetizers,... More

We had been to this restaurant before but they have performed some improvements in decor and flow so that it was like a new place. The lace tablecloths remained as did the waitresses dress in Mexican long dresses. The food has improved and the service, as well. Plus the real Matador is there and willing to demonstrate his prowess with... More

Go see chef Pablo for an unforgettable evening, he's a real matador as well as 5 star chef. Everything is good but the steaks are my favorite. Never a dull moment at El Matador!

Pablo is an excellent chef & entertainer. We visit each time we visit San Jose! Shrimp is excellent! Try the tiny appetizers!

The place to go in Cabo for the best in fine dining. Superb food and ambiance, enhanced by the romance of bull fighting as recounted by host Pablo, el Matador.
