El Matador is the finest restaurant in San Jose, owned by a former Matador, Pablo Velez. It boasts Mediterranean Mexican dining. It is in a neighborhood next to the Nun's Hospital. Their Scallopine Marsala is to die for as well as the other items on the menu. Please add this restaurant to your list. I can't imagine why it hasn't been on there as we have been eating there for at least 3 or 4 years.

Plesant surprise

On the recommendation of a friend we searched out this hidden gem in search of a good piece of red meat. As has been mentioned the host was charming but not intrusive. On the recommendation of a friend we searched out this hidden gem in search of a good piece of red meat. As has been mentioned the host was charming but not intrusive. The El Matador is one of our favourite dinning locations, this restaurant is family owned and run. Food has always been excellent and has a charming location, a little hard to find but worth the effort.

My family visited Cabo last week. My cousin highly recommended El Matador so I emailed for a reservation. The restaurant is actually located in a neighborhood just outside of downtown San Jose. The owner, Pablo, was incredibly gracious and professional. He had opened the restaurant just for our party (this is the slower season) so we had the beautiful outdoor... More

My husband and I just went to San Jose and went to El Matador for our last dinner. It is the coziest place with wonderful food and friendly service. A couple of years ago we went to Venice and ate in this little family owned restaurant in a small, narrow street away from all the tourist frenzy. It was also... More

Beautiful outdoor setting by the pool and in the back of a renovated house. Food was very good and service was excellent. We drove from Cabo San Lucas and it was well worth it.

Yep, it was that good, and the owner, Pablo (THE Matador) was very hands on and fun to listen to after dinner when he pulled out one of his capes and showed us some moves. Real Caesar Salad made at the table; bananas foster, etc. Great filet mignon and the shrimp with tequila and Kahlua was terrific. Go visit this... More

We have been going to El Matador for a few years now and mentioned a while back to Pablo that we would be interested if he would consider a cooking class. He was in agreement, so we made it happen. We had a group of six, and he knocked it out of the park. We made coconut shrimp, caesar salad,... More

Trip Advisor has never lead me wrong, this restaurant is testimony to it. It is a tad tedious to find as street signs are lacking in this residential area away from the Centro district. The search is worth the annoyance. The restaurant is a Spanish courtyard home with the main dining area in a lovely, quiet garden. The menu is... More

A little out of the way (a six dollar taxi from San Jose del Cabo old city) but worth the drive. Your host, Pablo Velez, is 52 years old. He has been a Matador since age 15, and he brings the passion and pride of his profession to his second great love, his restaurant...aptly named El Matador. The restaurant is... More

The owner El Matador is a very charming and friendly man that has opened his house to guests. He went out of his way to find the fish we wanted (red snapper) that evening, but it was overseasoned (to much salt, maybe MSG, etc), Just basic spices on the grill and it would have been great. Ordered a Sangria to... More
