The Little Green Men Have Transported This Pub

So far I have only had drinks in this quirky pub, but despite it being 40 mins drive ( or half a day's cycle ) it is fast becoming a favourite. From the outside, at a distance you expect a typical canal side English county pub, but as you get closer things are not quite as they seem. The pub... read more

We have been to this pub before when it was a co operative and had some lovely food there and it was nice and clean. Under new ownership it has definitely gone downhill, it needs a good clean and the campsite needs a clear out. Food was okay and we would go back because of the location. Shame as it... More

Quirky pub - but a great place to shelter and have dinner on a rather damp and cold Easter evening! Bar staff very helpful and homemade vegetarian lasagne was great, and good value.

Having read other reviews, I have to say that the one prior to this really sums up the whole situation here, and is a first class article. A lovely old building, good beers on offer, including the 'green' one, and a perfectly good menu. The staff just do not appear to be trained and food orders were sometimes incorrect or... More

A great location alongside the Kennet and Avon canal, this is a substantial and traditional looking pub with a good sized beer garden and a more modern, timber clad extension to one side. It featured on the television a couple of years back when it had closed and was bought by the local villagers as a co-operative venture. Service at... More

The Barge has a captive audience of walkers cyclists and boaters, as there isn't another pub for miles! For anyone else my advice is -don't bother! The place was dingy and looked like it hadn't been cleaned for weeks, the food portions were stingy and poorly presented, and the whole atmosphere was one of half-hearted amateurism. This is an example... More

A lovely Sunday lunch with friends. I enjoyed a superbly prepared ham, egg and chips. Excellent ham and perfectly fried eggs. My wife enjoyed a classic roast beef lunch with perfectly cooked vegetables and delicious gravy.. very generous portions. The Barge is a free house with an impressive range of beers. I look forward to returning again.

Always a pleasure to stop off here for a pint. Relaxed and authentic atmosphere with none of the gastropub pretensions. Murals of local sites and crop circle designs add to interest. Lovely setting beside Kennet & Avon canal and a good waypoint for a circular walk via Alton Barnes up over the downs or a good place to put in... More

Dropped in for a light lunch after a long muddy walk along the canal. We were made very welcome and our dog was too. Lovely atmospheric bar area. We had home made soup and it was delicious. Will be going back for a proper meal soon.

What a great place for a relaxed and chilled dining experience with great ale and cider to with your meal. Particularly recommended cider 'Away with the Fairies'! Visited here on a canal boat holiday in the school holidays and almost stayed here for the duration... Food well recommended - good quality, choice and speed of service. Beer and cider also... More
