Just to start, a few highly rated restaurants on TripAdvisor are no longer open. I ran into that issue, so based on a quick map recon and reviews scrub on TripAdvisor, la Portena was nearby. It is essentially a food shack with only bar seating for 5 or so people. My bar table was nicely situated right in front of... More

Note: as of this date the address is correct but the directions are not. Also the owners operate two restaurants from the same location. In the mornings you will find tacos with two cooks and from 5 pm to 1 am you will find La Porteña! If you want argentinean asado then go after 5 pm. We ate 3 times... More

Cheap, fast, and good $30 including tips for 4 persons. We had hamburger fries argentin sausage and 2 milangas. The milanga, its a grill steak and after that they fried it.

Ironically one of the earlier reviews which typo'd "open until 1pm" sums up the hours of La Portena, they can be quite erratic. However it's well worth it when you can find them open. Everything they sell is excellent, I've never had a bad meal there (and I've had quite a few!). I highly recommend eating here if you get... More

Although there is not real seating, don't miss this place. Kind of resembles a shack on a side street, but the meat was delicious and cheap. Service was friendly and made for one of the best stops of the night. Open until 1 pm and makes for a great late light snack. Don't miss out.

Always ask for the beef empanadas! The choripan torta is a must everytime! Its homemade locally and by far a great value. Hamburgers, arrapans, milanesas, they are all great and worth trying. I couldn't recommend this place more!

La Portena is the best place to go when you are craving meat or grilled chicken! Arturo, the chef, is fantastic and cooks up the best lemon chicken on the parilla. The arrachera, t-bone, rib eye and beef ribs are also all VERY good and priced less than 200 MXN (about $16US!) AMAZING value! The hamburgers and milanga (schnitzel) are... More

This was the first time we chose a restaurant in Playa that was not downtown central. A street-side counter w/ 1 barrel table. Prepared and cooked within feet of your eyes. The Rib-eye was a little gristly but tasty, as was everything. It was only the bits of gristle that caused the 4 instead of a 5. Perhaps if we... More

This place is easily one of the best places I've eaten at in Playa del Carmen. Last year my family had a giant family reunion in Playa. A few of us stumbled across this hidden gem and were blown away by the food. My steak melted in my mouth. We pretty much ended up trying everything on the menu and... More

One of the best dinners I have had in Playa. The rib eye, the salad, the potato and empanada for 199 pesos. Would return in a heartbeat.
