We ate at La Chaya twice. The food is only averagely good - well cooked but uninspired and relatively bland, It has some redeeming features: the extensive Yucatecan menu; central location; decent service; good cleanliness; very reasonable prices; excellent hand-made tortillas. Hence coming back there twice! But that was a result of heat/laziness and poor planning - while not a... More

We visited La Chaya Maya on a few occasions, as their menu is so varied and one wants to try everything on offer. The food is fresh, relevant to the Yucatan culture and the portions are reasonable, as are the prices. One of our visits was during an evening in which they had lost power, so it was nice to... More

This restaurant serves typical food of Yucatan. It has a large variety of dishes of this cuisine, all of exquisite taste. We received kind attention and efficient service in spite of being a large group of sixteen people. I definitely recommend it.

The NYT might have given La Chaya a pass, but tasteless food and poor service abounded for us. The food was unoriginal and needed salt or flavor depending on your taste. Thought not over priced, it's off of my list.

After reading the great reviews I was excited about visiting this place but was sadly disappointed. I've lived in Central America for a little while now, and hence had tried some of the dishes we ordered before and honestly, they were average at best! The dishes we ordered were either bland or salty and one person on the table was... More

The food is amazing! The atmosphere is great! The prices are actually really good for the giant portions they serve. If you find yourself in Merida, go to La Chaya! Even if your are a poor backpacker like myself!

Hand rolled corn tortillas paired with authentic Mayan dishes were my favorite meal of my trip to Merida, Mexico. The table of 6, shared a platter meal, which was plenty of food. It was nice to eat meals prepared with recipes with deep roots in the Yucatan Peninsula. The decor is beautiful. If you are expecting 4-5 star New York,... More

If you're in Merida centro, it's certainly because you decided to go off the usual path of tourist attractions like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. There's no reason to skip that place, they have all the traditional Yucatan dishes at good prices.
