The setting of the restaurant was colonial and picturesque and we had our first Yucatecan meal here. Our meals were tasty, service was good, and prices reasonable.

The food was different and unique. Well prepared, but not to my liking. Soups were were truly delicious and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

I've only been to the original restaurant--which is a little cramped. They've opened a new, much larger, location about 1 1/2 blocks away. It looks awfully pretty and quite popular.

The place is located just a couple of blocks away from the Main Square. It is small, does not look like much from the outside. When we arrived, there was already a crowd outside waiting for their time to get in. One even commented "if this is packed it shall be good". it was an understatement, the food is very... More

This place had been recommended to us by several people and I'm sad to report it was just average for us. We tried the sopa de Lima in three places while we were in Merida and this one was our least favorite. We also tried the cochinita pibil and the queso relleno and they were also just okay. Even the... More

We asked everyone local we talked to (which was quite a few people since the people of Merida are so friendly and helpful) where we should try a traditional yucatan meal, and every single one of them said La Chaya. The cochinita pibil here is AMAZING! Order it, not as a sampler, but as its own dish. We had a... More

Located just 2 blocks from the main square, La Chaya is probably among your best restaurant bets in Merida, other than eating at the very authentic market stalls (if you do, go to Santa Ana square). The corn tortillas are hand made in front of you and the kitchen is very authentic Yucateca. All dishes are excellent as is the... More

Before I start the actual review, be aware that that there are two restaurants with the same name close together in the centre of Merida. They are run by the same management team but provide different levels of ambiance and food. La Chaya (Centro) is located in a nondescript modern building on the corner of Calle 57 and 62. La... More
