Not Quite...

We were 12 people visiting Origin a few nights ago. The restaurant looks quite nice and I've had high expectations on it. Four of us left after going through their Menu - fair enough since the restaurant's proposal isn't really for everyone's taste. The eight of us who stayed, sadly didn't have a... read more

Friends who live in Oaxaca suggested we meet them at Origen for dinner on Valentine's Day and we will always be gratefully. The many courses paired with mezcal (I substituted wine) were among some of the best dishes we've ever had any place in the world. Beginning with delicious fois gras pate, the following servings were complex and wonderful and... More

I usually wait til I get home to write revues, but this couldn't wait. I've eaten all over the world and occasionally you get a world class meal. Tonight was one. Only nine tables, off the Alcala, second floor, and does not close at 8 like it says on Trip Advisor. I had the grilled fish chintentl and it was... More

I have started making a pilgrimage to this restaurant whenever I'm in Oaxaca. This last time did not disappoint. A complex plate of Plantain dumplings were one of the most mouth watering, well layered dishes I've had in a LONG time. Sweet, salty, spicy, creamy......all the addictive flavours were there. The ribs were bathed in a very complex chile sauce.... More

Beautiful restaurant very close to the Zocalo. Our Spanish is rudimentary at best. Communication with the waiter was a bit unclear but the result even better than expected. Ordered an excellent capellini dish and fish entree. Waiter asked whether we wanted it in the middle of the table indicating that we might want to share both dishes and he was... More

We took the cooking class here on the recommendation of some ex-pats who live in Oaxaca. The chef, Rodolfo (who is fluent in English), first took us to the largest market in Oaxaca (the Abastos) to shop and learn local ingredients. We then went back to the Origen kitchen to learn how to cook an amazing Oxacan meal, took a... More

This is a lovely restaurant - the decor is elegant with attractive artwork. The food is visually appealing in its presentation. The chef clearly aspires to a high level of creativity and excellence. Unfortunately the actual delivery falls short - and at least in our experience, needs more work before they can aspire to the levels of Casa Oaxaca or... More

We went to Origen for dinner on New Year's Eve. The first course was oysters, which in a city in Mexico 250km from the sea seemed like an invitation to hepatitis. So my wife ate mine, declared them delicious, and never got ill. The next course was yet another seafood that requires absolute care and freshness: sea urchin soup. Coincidentally,... More

My second visit to Origen did not disappoint. Oscar was a friendly, familiar face to welcome us. The newly redone dining room in front is an improvement. We had a great table by one of the balcony windows. Meal was exquisite from beginning to end. I was slightly disappointed Oscar offered no mescal this time, but perhaps he's commenting on... More

Origen has an ambitious menu with some 'new takes on traditional dishes' and other very inventive ones. The gratinated lettuce was a surprise hit, as was the fish with beetroot puré. The dishes were relatively small, but absolutely mouthwatering. The desserts set us all swooning. It's expensive and a 'special night out' kind of place. Book in advance.
