A taste of Morocco hidden in Oaxaca

The restaurant choices in Oaxaca (except for various forms of moles) are limited. This hidden gem is worth going to. Try the kefta sandwich. It transports me back to Morocco. we had previously had some takeout pastries from El Morocco and decided to have lunch there. We arrived before they were opening that day but they welcomed us and seated us early, serving us mint tea. We ordered Greek salad, flavorful, finely chopped cucumber/tomato/mint/feta salad and cheese and meat appetizers, in a flaky buttery phyllo pastry.

We came because it was recommended by Trip Advisor. As people familiar with Morrocon food, the Pasttia looked better than it tasted. It was a bit dry and the shell not crispy enough. The salad with mint was very good. They were also a bit stingy with the typical mint tea , which typically is offered freely, and here we... More

I was a bit tiered of eating Oaxacan and Italian food for four weeks, and having studied abroad in Morocco I was getting a bit nostalgic and wanted some couscous and this restaurant was perfect! Although hummus is not a classically Moroccan dish, the restaurant offers a nice array of Mediterranean cuisine. The salad, couscous and baklava assortment was delicious!... More

El Morocco has made every effort to provide authentic food and ambience. It is great to have this super alternative to Oaxacan fare, as much as we love that too. Our favorite dishes are the meat-cheese-vegetable pastry appetizers and the lamb couscous. Service is very good too as is the location and prices are reasonable.

Nice atmosphere, very comfy seating. The waiter was actually from Morocco and delivered some good vegetarian options. The olives took me right back to Fez.

Try the beet and mango salad. Two for 1 happy hour is always a plus. Decent prices and generous helpings. Thank you other TA reviewers for the recommendations. Service was great and fast. I do not know what the other reviewers were talking about.

El Morocco was a pleasant surprise just outside central Oaxaca in a residential area. The food was very comparable to that one would find in any city in Morocco - without having to make the trip. Very reasonable prices and wonderful service in a typical Moroccan atmosphere.

Very happy to have found this restaurant. Very comfortable low couches, nice lighting and full open front with the breezes coming in. Killer [meaty] olives in their own garlic olive oil. Ordered the orange salad and bastilla. Perfectly done, crisp, not dry and very savory with overtones of cinnamon and spice. As a chef and restaurant owner, I was very... More
