I ate at many of the restaurants listed in trip advisor over an 8 day period in Oaxaca. Decided to try this place because it was always crowded with the mixture of Mexican and non Mexican tourists. The food was from the isthmus of Mexico. Authenic but different than the usual Oaxacan cuisine which became repetitious after a while.
The food was different, with a lot of " I wonder how they make this sauce, dip, drink?" It was not fusion gitzy food that a lot of the higher rated restaurants on your trip advisor restaurant list present to the tourists.

Fantastic!

One of the best restaurants we tried in Oaxaca. Excellent drinks, wonderful food, good service. We visited it multiple times and it got better each time (probably because we knew what we were ordering then). The specialty margaritas are especially tasty.

As others have mentioned, this menu features food from the isthmus region of Mexico. According to an article on Mexico Cooks!, "The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is the skinniest part of mainland Mexico, lying between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Partly in Oaxaca, partly in Chiapas, partly in Tabasco and partly in Veracruz, the territory has its own... More

This restaurant is a few blocks from the historic center, but not far from the church of Santo Domingo. It specializes in cuisine from the isthmus south of Oaxaca. The service was attentive, and I ordered according to the friendly waiter's recommendation: a plate of red and black mole: generous portion, out-of-this-world good. Prices very reasonable. Closed Sundays.

You want a very fine meal prepared and served with care? Then this is your place. Chic and centrally located, the atmosphere alone makes you feel good. The tlayuda is excellent, so is the mole. This one is a can't miss.

The place is chic and attractive, the food is delicious and well presented. A bit disconcerting on arrival since no one came to seat us, then we enjoyed each dish: the tlayuda was superb, the cochito was tender/tasty and the enchiladas with two types of mole (black and red) that were really delicious and unique (although the filling of potato... This place is next door to the better known Bisnaga but is not intended to catch their overflow - Zandunga stands alone on its own merits. To continue the comparison, my overall experience is that the food and service are more refined than at Bisnaga. The menu selection may be smaller but what they do - and there are enough... More

When in Oaxaca sampling world famous moles, try the Istmus ones at Zandunga. The enchiladas, black and red moles, tlayudas and guacamole were all highest quality and the prices very reasonable, with excellent friendly and prompt service.

Oaxaca is culinary famous and Zandunga was the restaurant offering the gastronomical pleasure we were looking for. We chose the 4 regional dishes we were adviced for and were not disappointed. Also good price/quality ratio. Strongly recommended

We had dinner elsewhere, thinking this place would be full (high season and all that), but we totally could have eaten here - just something to be aware of in case they tell you it's full. We had drinks at the bar and they were exquisite - margaritas with local mezcal, with sal de gusano (worm salt!) on the rim.... More
