Close, but no Cigar

Everyone told me to make sure I check out Casa Oaxaca so I did. And then, nothing happened. It was good food, but it wasn't memorable. And, it was like being in a medical exam room. It was 8:00 at night and it was a bright as an office visit.

Casa Oaxaca is a superb restaurant located across from the church of Santa Domingo in the historic centro of Oaxaca. The service is wonderful attentive but not intrusive. The food is simply fantastic. Starting with the ingredients which are very carefully sourced, the chef prepares imaginative renderings using organic and often indigenous ingredients. The result is a classic meal, reflecting... More

We decided to visit last evening, having heard good things. We had also heard that they were tricky with some folks about getting a table. My partner and I are both in the Art World and we dress very colorful and it brings joy to both ourselves and many people. When I asked the hostess for a table she asked... More

It's hard to get a reservation here at the last minute. You need to plan in advance especially if you want a terrace table overlooking Santo Domingo Church. I recommend the Xoconostle mezcalini, the house red wine and a glass of purified water infused with a slice of cucumber chaser. My first course: the goat cheese stuffed squash blossom salad... More

We loved this place. We were a mix of Mexicans and world traveling gringos and we all left very happy. Some of the hits: the tomato and goat cheese salad was out of this world, the "guiso Tehuano" (cerdito confitado), and the pulpo all got great reviews. I really enjoyed the mezcal that the waiter suggested and appreciated that he... More

I came across Casa Oaxaca when planning our visit and decided to make a reservation several days in advance. It was a good call. Perhaps one of the best restaurants I've been in Mexico. Great combination of traditional dishes and modern refinery. A must in Oaxaca

We were lucky enough to get a reservation for the last day of our stay in Oaxaca. This is definitely our best dinner in Mexico. It started with the live mixing of our dip, seasoned to taste and with great tasting tomatoes. We tried different dishes such as rabbit and suckling pig which were really excellent. Go there and enjoy... More

The food was excellent, and the service was very attentive and unlike any other I experienced in Oaxaca. EXCELLENT ALL AROUND. But my dining companion did, unfortunately, get very sick off the goat mole.

Lovely roof terrace and great service. One of the more formal places we ate in in Mexico. Good menu, well executed and good Mexican wine. It was busy and you must book ahead of you want table in the terrace at night. Would come again and it was a better dining experience than Casa Crespi which some guides rate equally... More

A combination of Oaxacan and international fusion food well prepared and presented at the table. Nice ambiance on the terrace. Make reservations ahead of time because this place gets fully booked very quickly. It's very popular with the locals and Mexican tourists. You can sample different kinds of Mezcal, a alcoholic beverage from the Agave plant, if you wish. Very... More
