This was our first meal in Oaxaca. We were anxious to try Oaxacan cuisine and this restaurant did not disappoint. We were served chapulines, chile relleno, and chicken almondrendo (?) among others. The servers were kind and attentive. This became the restaurant by which others were judged for the rest of our trip.

There is something slightly off putting about the entrance to this restaurant which is probably why it has few tourists. Walk into this covered courtyard however and there is a feeling of space and tranquillity. There are menus in English but there was some confusion when after being given a breakfast menu at lunchtime we asked for the lunch menu... More

I was the only non-Mexican customer in this restaurant, and that's always a good sign. The food was simply superb, not a huge choice, but all the classic Mexican dishes beautifully prepared with fresh and delicious ingredients. The setting is pleasant, an interior courtyard, but then that's true of most of Oaxaca's restaurants. Service friendly and polite too. The wait... More

Our waiter was very sweet and accommodating. He made excellent suggestions and was more than willing to change menu items to accommodate vegetarians. The atmosphere is beautiful, and the food tasted great.

The location of Hosteria de Alcala is good. The service was polite and the food was good. The wine collection is impressive. We can recommend this fine restaurant!

It all started with us asking what the different moles tasted like. Without further ado, and at no expense, we were provided with tasting samples. That attention to the customer and great hospitality was how we treated through out the meal. It was a joy. Go there and then drop into the English language bookstore at the entrance way to... More

We came in here for a simple lunch, and ordered one lasagne and one spaghetti carbonara. The carbonara was theatrically prepared next to the table, but the result can best be described as a grey, flavourless slush. The lasagne arrived ten minutes later with the pasta sheets still hard. The waiter offered to microwave it for a bit longer, but... More

For years, decades actually, this has been our go-to-first-place for cranked-out-one-at-a-time Margaritas served in elegant classic glasses on the rocks in a grand setting. Last week it all looked the same. We repeated our order for two Margaritas with salt and one w/o - in Spanish - which they got wrong . That didn't much matter because what came was... More

Oaxaca is a wonderful place to escape from the madness of El Norte. It's a city of high culture and fine restaurants, some of the best in Mexico. Among these stand Hosteria de Alcala. It has a beautiful atrium, surrounded by climbing vines. I had cream of tomato with jalapeno mousse, followed by tuna tostadas topped with poro, a garden... More
