Great Classic

A beautiful classic, with perfect service and food. The mole sauce was out of this world. I had a spicy whole baby octopus (pulpo). We wanted to go back and eat there again but I think they only daytime hours in the location we were at, near the Palacio del Belle Arts.

I wish I could just eat here all the time. Great food, great people watching, fast service... Love the hustle and bustle of it all.

El Cardenal is an old school Mexican institution, where you will find generally impeccable service, very nice traditional Mexican flare with class. Business breakfast and lunches.

Cardenal is the best place to have real mexican food at an reasonable price. breakfast is definitely the best, even better than lunch. I attend this place twice a week. I know that. I am mexican.

This restaurant is nestled just downtown, Reservations are a must. Surrounding area is nice, you can walk and just take a nice stroll. Menu is admirable, descriptive, tempting. Food is very good, not on the cheap side but not overly expensive either. Service is good. For a nice meal in the heart of town, this is an excellent choice.

This is very good restaurant to make the target of a walking tour of the historic district. That tour would include the National Palace, the Templo Mayor, the Basilica, and the area around. From the Zocolo (main square), the Cardenal is but 2/3 blocks away. The tour is first rate and I highly recommend it.

Better than grandma's, better than street food, better than a celebrity-chef restaurant. This place balances authentic and homey with quality and refinement.

We ate lunch here on a whim and it was fabulous. Absolutely beautiful decor and food. Highly recommend sharing an entree and having a main course each. Service was brilliant. And you must try their margarita. For anywhere in Mexico, we found that lunch is the main meal of the day rather than dinner, and eating late is the go... More

There are two El Cardenals. I'm writing about the one closest to the Cathedral. Great service and the dish I had Oaxacan Mole was magnificent. Very popular among Mexico City residents and with good cause. Prime time probably will require a reservation. I went in the off hours. If you're in El Centro Historico this place is a total winner.
