Description: Country boutique hotels don't come much better than The Bell at Hampton Poyle, a timeless escape located only ten minutes from the Oxford city centre on the edge of the Cotswolds. Soused in that indefinable countryside cosiness, this restaurant has oodles of English charm and features open log fires, flagstone floors, oak beams and large leather armchairs which attract a mixed crowd of posh travellers and London's Sauvignon Blanc set who come for romantic mini-breaks. The menu here is a spot-on mix of contemporary British classics, wood-fired pizzas and fresh fish which is served simply grilled with butter sauces. We recommend The Bell's Peking duck pizza and the delicious crab and shrimp burger.

I loved it. We ate there twice and were bowled over by the prowess of the chefs. Breakfast was first class, and thank heavens, served outstanding artisan bread at breakfast. So fed up of getting great bread at supper and slapton-rice in the morning! This really stood out as being a first-class place to eat.

Fantastic! We are very pleased to hear about your satisfactory stay with us. Our head chef Nick Anderson is a Michelin star chef and even though The Bell does not wish to go that way. We do take pride in our job and we are glad you appreciate it. Thank you. More

Visited here on recommendation of our campsite staff, and although the pub has a lovely cosy feel and decor, we found the staff to be a little unfriendly. It took about 15-20 minutes from arrival to be shown to a table, despite the restaurant being practically empty and two further requests to be seated - we got the impression they... More

Thank you for your review. I am a little bit surprised as recently I had a comment about an extra friendliness of the staff. I am of course concerned about your comment and will address it with my staff. We are glad to hear that you have enjoyed the rest of your experience. More

We booked a table for 4 at the Hampton Poyle Bell for last Saturday at 20-30. We arrived promptly at 20-15 to find a catalogue of poor service. Firstly, the table which we had booked was "not quite ready" as it had previous diners still in situ. So we were invited to order drinks at the bar. I ordered the... More

I am very sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience with us. I must say, recently with great weather and the holiday season we have been extremely busy. Many people do not book, just walk in. Therefore I have noticed that some of our regular customers have been overlooked. I do apologise about that but I... More

Our first visit, after a hiccup where they had cancelled our booking, we then proceeded to have an excellent evening. There was a wedding being held concurrently, however the service was top notch all the way through. The menu is innovative and varied, and they had a complete menu of specials, especially focused on fish. Nice to see a real... More

Whenever in the area we always visit the Bell which probably says it all. The food both in terms of quality and variety has never yet disappointed and this visit was no exception. The place has a open airy feel including the open plan kitchen. We were a bit less well pleased with the service as, having arrived early to... More

Thank you very much for your review. I do have to admit that I have couple of members of staff on holiday at the moment and summer students are not the easiest to manage. Sorry about that, but very glad to hear that you are returning and we hope to see you soon! We will definitely do better next time. More

Following a recommendation to some friends we decided to go for Sunday lunch with them and see how good it really was. Atmosphere and decor all very promising and the staff were welcoming and helpful. The dinning room was of a nice proportion and the tables set out so not to feel too crowded. Menus for Sunday and also the... More

While eating lunch at the Eyston Arms in Wantage (a favourite of mine to take visitors to), I heard that they had another restaurant closer to Oxford - The Bell. The owners have an excellent ability (and eye) to decorate their establishments beautifully and tastefully. Everywhere you look, there is something eye-catching. We were particularly keen on Sunday Carvery -... More

We ate simple but it was freshly made and delicious, the menu is excellent and varied. The restaurant is nice and well laid out. We also had breakfast which was delicious, fresh and local food, they even had pancakes as it was shrove tuesday.

I went to The Bell Sunday just gone with my family and it was very good. Service was great and food was very tasty and great value for money. The roast was a bit bland and boring but the rest of the food was superb. I would of rated this place excellent but the only thing that let's it down... More
