Tucked away, gastro pub

A good meeting point, very large gastro pub tucked away in Grantchester village. A good walk from Cambridge along the river. Loads of seating, some lovely trendy mason jar drinks. The food was good but sadly the service was slow. A 1.30 booking for 7 people ended with dessert at 3.30. It was pricey... read more

No one greeted us when we arrived. They had no record of our booking. When we managed to get some attention the girl we found was standing at the desk eating her pudding! The menus given to us were not all the same so there was confusion as to what was on and what wasn't. No wine list was offered.... More

Popped in for a lunch time business meeting, food was very good although a bit on the pricey side for pub food. Service was slow they need to raise their game in this area. Overall well worth a visit if you are passing.

We went along to The Red Lion for a girlie night on a Saturday, and sat in the private room. The room is a great setting for a special occasion. The food, as ever, was great, but on this occasion it was the service that really stood out. We have been going to The Red Lion for some years and... More

Hard to think of a more pleasant way to spend a summer lunchtime than mooching along the footpath from Cambridge to Grantchester, then having lunch here. The service was friendly and helpful, if slightly scatty ("would you like a knife and fork?" Ummmm...yes, I normally do have those items with my dinner...) and the summer lunch menu was very pleasant... More

I visited with a friend who has been unwell. We thought lunch in the sunny courtyard would be pleasant. We both chose asparagus and duck egg ,eaten with rustic bread from the oven This was good. For pudding we chose rhubarb and orange Eton mess with a ginger biscuit. The "mess" had too much cream, not enough meringue and very sweet rhubarb,... More

The food was incorrect on several occasions when first delivered to the table. This was always corrected but it did result in delays so that members of the party had to wait whilst others started eating. The issues would appear to have been entirely down to the kitchen staff not reading orders properly. The evening could have been disappointing but... More

In the cooler months we love to come and sit in the cozy pub area, and in the warmer months the garden is superb! There is a children's play area and plenty of seating. The menu is very impressive with dishes ranging from more sophisticated such as the smoked duck breast salad and asparagus with quail egg, to comfort foods... More

Went for an evening meal on a Sunday. My Peroni Shandy was made with Soda Water... that pretty much says it all! I had the pork belly, which to be fair was lovely. But the yorkshire had clearly been cooked at lunch, as had the roasties, which were reheated. Also, there was no crackling - pretty much the reason I... More

When my father celebrated his 70th birthday in July 1995, he gathered his clan for a sunny Sunday lunch at the Red Lion. I've been back "en famille reduit" (with my mother) on a couple of occasions and our latest visit was very satisfactory. There's parking close to the front door for disabled people, the garden is attractive and the... More
