Great lunch spot when in Old SJ

We enjoyed our visit to El Convento and lunch at El Picoteo. The restaurant is in the courtyard of the Old Convent in Old San Juan. The tapas menu is very simple -- meats, fish, dips, one paella, small pizzas, etc. We sample 7-8 dishes -- all very good. Drinks were very good also. This is a great... read more

We were excited to check out the unique El Convento setting & enjoy some much needed refreshment after trekking around Old San Juan. The setting was very nice, but the food didn't seem to be anything special although it was tasty for the most part. Probably not worth the pricey bill though.

The place was very busy but the service was very friendly and very fairly prompt. I was by myself and did not feel out of place. It is a vibrant friendly place. They drinks were great, I did not eat but was told by people next to me that what they were having was delicious.

This restaurant is a charming space on the second floor of El Convento Hotel but it's operated by a separate company. (The same company has the very good pizza restaurant next door.) Without question our dinner was the best tapas meal we've had. The very generous serving of beef tenderloin skewers was perfectly done and came with a tasty sauce.... More

We had tapas and drinks with friends who were not staying in Old San Juan. We all loved the atmosphere and the staff was very helpful. It was not overly crowded and we arrived at 8:00 O'clock. We were not very adventuresome with the ordering but enjoyed everything especially the garlic/lemon shrimp and octopus. Good drinks - but light on... More

We made a reservation here and like other rests in Viejo San Juan, it was a good thing because it was so busy -we were seated in an odd arrangement, with both of us on one side of the table, with our backs to the balcony facing the rest of the room. There was a long table of noisy tourists... More

All our tapas dishes were delightful ~ but ~ the Tres Leche was beyond description. Absolutely the best on the island (and I've made it a personal mission to taste as many as possible [for the last 22 years].

We stayed at the El Convento Hotel (which was wonderful) and ate three meals at El Picoteo due to convenience. The paella was average as was the service. Other meals we had, various tapas and the pizza were sub-par. The pizza was seven inches in diameter for $17. It was a greasy mess with the cheese - not good and... More

Very relaxing place to step out of the sun enjoy cold beers and fresh tapas. Items were pricey but quality was high. When asking about the size of ceviche we were told about a cup so we ordered 2 tapas each but the servings were actually more generous.

This is my favorite restaurant in old San Juan. I went here years ago on business and loved it. We took a cruise with a stop in Old San Juan Puerto Rico. I found the restaurant once again and was still as pleased with it as before. It is located in Hotel Il Convento at 100 Cristo Street, Old San... More
