Had a lovely meal here last night. Extremely good food and wine and a marvellous local gin. Staff friendly, efficient and knowledgable. I booked on line and heard back in plenty of time. Do try the "ham and egg" starter if it's listed and according to my other half it's the best Stilton he's ever tasted! Roll on Friday.

Good food; huge portions. Seafood tapas particularly good as a shared starter - especially the potted crab and calamari. Decent value for money too. Only slight disappointment was my dessert. The lemon parfait was tasty once it had finally defrosted, but the accompanying meringues were poor. Worth a visit if you're staying locally - we would return.

Saw this place on Trip Advisor and it is just as the majority say - excellent food, especially the fish. After enjoying the breads with olives and sun-dried tomatoes we had the local crab and prawn cocktail and the channel squid for starters. Generally I find squid can be a bit rubbery but this was the best squid I've ever... More

We tried The Laughing Monk last year on recommendation and really enjoyed the food, so we returned during another holiday to Dartmouth. If anything, it was even better. The food was excellent, with a shared seafood tapas starter well worth the price. A main of beautifully cooked monkfish tail was so fresh it still contained the tailbone! Not to discourage... More

Just returned from a weeks holiday in Dartmouth and we decided to go to The Laughing Monk in Strete near Dartmouth after going there 30yrs ago. It was the best decision we made as the food was excellent and the owners were very helpful. The food was cooked to perfection, I only wish I'd decided on the fish as it... More

We were lucky enough to stumble across this restaurant as staying near by, and my what good fortune. We ended up eating here 3 times and every time was as excellent as the first. My hero is Tom Kerridge and now I have found his fish equivalent in chef Ben Handley ! Each dish was cooked to perfection and both... More

And made even better by just walking up from Strete Barton House. Funny title for an old school house but very welcoming and not stuffy. The food was very good and well thought out; wine list also good (did I mention no-one had to drive?). Staff very pleasant. Not cheap but good value

This time last week we were enjoying a delicious supper at The Laughing Monk. We felt so welcome ... the door was opened for us on our arrival and everyone was so friendly. The bistro is in an old school house and has very tasteful decor in keeping with the building. The whole meal was truly DELICIOUS!!! So much care... More

Although we've visited the area many times before, we'd never tried The Laughing Monk. We were staying just yards away at Strete Barton House and decided to give it a go on Bank Holiday Monday. We managed to book a table within three hours go going, and the place was well busy when we arrived for our 8.15 slot. We... More
