Back in time for a warm welcome

We called in for lunch last week, and walked into an historic country pub with character, warm fires and an even warmer welcome. We had not booked but it may be a good idea as it got busy after we arrived. The food was excellent, well cooked, very tasty and was good value due to the quality. My... read more

A nice country local serving good meals. Visited on a Wednesday lunchtime and it was so popular that some people were not able to get a table. Because of the number of people having a meal, the kitchen was having difficulty and we had to wait some considerable time for the food. When it came it was worth the wait.

An excellent Mothers Day Sunday lunch, service was great with everyone willing to help and worked with a smile. The food was also excellent, well presented and very tasty. The atmosphere was very warming with a great stove fire. We travelled up from Witney Oxfordshire to this lovely gem and will do so again .

This is my sort of place. Unpretentious environment, excellent food (try the slightly unpromising sounding black pudding scotch eggs, followed by the shoulder of lamb). Attentive, unobtrusive, but welcoming and friendly service, made this a lunch out that I hope to repeat in this all round excellent find.

We visited this pub on a Tuesday evening. As we walked through the door we were immediately greeted like old friends & made to feel very welcome. The logs fires were lit which made the pub warm and cosy. To start, I had the Pan Fried Halloumi whilst my partner had the Malt Shovel Smokie. The food arrived quickly &... More

I will always say what I think. I did not expect too much when I booked the Malt Shovel but it really exceeded my expectations. Brearton is a lovely little village near Ripley and Knaresborough. The Malt Shovel seems to be the only pub, but what a pub. The atmosphere is great, the service great a fabulous menu and a... More

This was our first visit to the Malt Shovel and after enjoying such great food, it certainly won't be the last. Spoilt for choice with a menu and specials board, we finally chose our lunch (three of us today) and were not disappointed at all - presentation, quantity and content were spot on and we were bowled over with the... We went there on a Thursday evening for my husbands birthday. My husband is passionate about Wiener Schnitzel, which has been a menu standard, however we have been put off this gasto-pub previously because it has not felt welcoming. However on this cold February night we received a warm and friendly welcome, and we realised after conversation with the guy... More
