Great cakes, coffee, a roaring fire and comfortable chairs. What is there not to like about the cafe? The service was excellent and there were books to browse and an interesting leaflet on the birds of the Catlins, which I bought. A great stop over in a small town where you can also fill up the tank..

Thanks for the feedback. The Bird Booklet is put together by Forest and Bird and a great publication. Cheers, Steve More

Owaka looks like an attractive, sleepy little town and would probably make a good place to stop off either for the night or, like us, for a bite to eat. The Catlins Café has plenty of off-street parking out front. We seemed to be amongst the few people who were adhering to the notice at the door to remove boots... More

Stopped here on our way out of the Catlins on a cold wet day, the fire made the cafe very cosy, Very spacious with lots of seating to choose from. Small selection of cabinet food plus a small blackboard menu, lots of home made fare. I can recommend the vegetarian nachos very nice, a lot like how I would make... More

Thank you for your feedback. The fire does seem to keep people around. It's just a shame we have to have it on! Cheers, Steve More

Visited with my family and the service was shocking. No menus offered. Only ones available we tried to order from , only to be told, those are for evening only. Two people at counter who just ignored us while we were standing there.

We had their fish and chips, they were excellent and the owner was very helpful in staying open a little later to serve us as we had arrived late in the day.

Relatively expensive food that was neither bad nor good. The service was also average, though as a family business that was understandable.

Ok so four of us came in for lunch. We tried to order from the menu on the bench but that was promptly removed as it wasn't for us. That menu showed a burger and chips for 11 dollars. We then ordered from the board at 18.50 for the same item and were overcharged by 3.50 each because according to... More

Hi, I'm sorry to hear of your experience with us and do apologise. With regards the menu that was on the counter that was for the Bottom Bus patrons who call in 5 times a week with an average of 15 passengers. They have negotiated a basic menu, priced and sized accordingly to suit the 'budget' travellers who are their... More

We came into the cafe on a freezing, windy morning and it had an open fire going and felt warm and welcoming. We only had a coffee and hot chocolate as we had only just had breakfast. Both were great. They have lounge chairs around the fire and you can read the papers and books provided or sit at the... More

Catherine and I spent a couple of days in the Catlins and stayed overnight near Owaka. We ate in the evening at the Lumberjack - as it didnt open until 6pm we headed for the Owaka pub for a beer - friendly place with a roaring fire. So the next morning we had breakfast at the Catlins Cafe meaning we... More

I enjoyed a delicious and very filling egg breakfast. The eggs were scrambled, the toast came with flavorful jelly and the mushrooms, tomato and fried potato were excellent. The cafe has a warm wood stove surrounded by chairs with deep cushions. Lots of reading material on the tables and a wonderful selection of pastries in the cabinet. If the weather... More
