Five of us visited this excellent pub restaurant in a village 8 miles north of York for dinner. Three of us had been before, but we were more than pleasantly surprised at the new menu and even more so by the stunning quality and imaginative presentation of what emerged from the kitchen to delight and stimulate our palates. Popped in for a light sandwich lunch and ended up having better quality food than we anticipated at a very reasonable price. Highlights included a cauliflower veloute, seafood platter (with heritage beetroot and pea shoots - all very good) and fish and chips (the chips were obviously double fried - the best tasted for ages ... AND cooked in beef... More

Our party of four decided it may be a good place for Wednesday lunch. It was not busy - quiet in fact. The menu looked attractive. I made a mistake in ordering from the so called `a la carte' menu. The delivery of the meals to the table was `casual' and mine the last to be delivered. My plate arrived... More

Most reviews were good so decided to visit for lunch. Chose the rated fish and chips for main which could have been excellent but oil was still draining from the batter of both fish. Not many customers but our waitress was excellent and impressed us both . The total cost seemed high at the end of our meal, especialy for... More

This is e regular haunt for us and it has never disappointed. Had Sunday lunch last weekend and both said one of the best we've eaten out recently ( and we eat out a lot ) Succulent pink beef, lovely vegetables and great yorkshire puds. Could not find room for desert. Have already booked a table for our next visit.

Arrived on time, 10+ minutes to take an initial drinks order. A la carte menu overpriced and somewhat pretentious. 10 to 15 more to take meal order and meals (mains only) came an hour after our arrival, despite only a handful of diners in the place. Good but expensive sausage and mash. Fried fish was overcooked and rigid in dark... More

We have avoided this restaurant for along time, as the place had declined under previous management. However with a new very skilled chef in place, we where advised to try it again. The chefs cooking was fantastic, lovely front of staff. The restaurant needs to be DE cluttered and the removal of plastic flower on the table, would give it... More

We ate here with friends one evening. The Rose and Crown used to aspire to fine dining but we were told it had lowered its sights somewhat but was still very good. From the outset we thought the prices looked expensive. We all chose modest main courses - fish and chips (that came with a mushy pea puree!!!!!????), sausage and... More

Despite the restaurant being full, the service we received was second to none! The food was delicious and good sized portions. Wild mushroom risotto is highly recommended and I'm not a vegetarian! A party of 6 ladies were unable to get a taxi, being Saturday night, so 2 members of staff drove them home. Now THATS above and beyond what... More

We have enjoyed Sunday lunch here on a number of occasions over the past few years but our latest visit a couple of weeks ago was very disappointing. We had to ask if we could sit at our table after being left waiting in the bar for 45 minutes. The starters were tasty but the portions were miniscule! We had... More
