Frangokastello has a surprising number of tavernas tucked away in small coves, so no wonder that, even after 16 years, we'd never eaten at Vatalos. Expect a really friendly welcome and tasty food, with a good selection for vegetarians. When we asked the meaning of 'Vatalos', Spiros told us a tale which spoke volumes of Sfakia's past. So - visit... More

5 stars isn't enough. Spiros and Theo are very very kind and helpful (Spiros sorted our broken down hire car, coming back from the farm specially when they were trying to rip us right off). The food is wonderful. Shelley is a chef and has very high standards, all met. Huge choice for veggies, fish fantastic - the octopus is... More

We were seduced a couple of times by the beautiful hydrangeas and quaint decoration of some of the other tavernas in Frangokastello, but were lucky enough to be pointed towards the Vatalos Taverna, by a couple of people who live in the area. If you don't mind the rather plain appearance of the place, the food here surpassed anything else... More

A wide range of local dishes, including fresh fish and locally-reared lamb and pork. Helpings are generous and washed down with good local wine. We particularly liked the creamy cheese from the neighbouring village.all consumed looking out over the sea as the sun dips below the horizon.

We had a lovely meal on this very busy taverna. The lamb chops were plentiful and delicious. A tasty, unrushed meal for two with wine for €30 - excellent value and kindly hosts.

Great location , fair prices 10-12 € per person, excellent food (tsigariasto me mizithra!!!!!) excellent friendly owners .Someone should also book a peaceful seafront room in order to swim early in the morning to an almost private beach ( rocky at start sandy a few meters deeper) A great value for money choice!!

Large menu with many traditional dishes, modest prices, friendly service. A must if you are travelling in the south.

As vegetarians we often have little or no choice in restaurants but Greece is good for us as there is usually a reasonable choice of starters. In this taverna, there was a really good choice and we were able to order 4 or 5 between us, instead of having a main course. It is a very friendly and relaxed place... More

the ingrediens where good, pitty that all foodtast was spoiled by a oily/fat substance of about >3mm on the whole plate that tasted terrible, old? heated several times? overheated? longtime frozen? The position of the restaurant is perfect, just by the beach with great view, its on the end of the mainroad along the beach, west from centre Frangokastello.
