Description: Kay's Gringo Postres roughly translated means Kay's NorthAmerican Sweets. Kay and her husband, Tom, from South Dakota, started out as a tiny pastry and coffee shop and grew into the only place in Atenas and for miles around that serves real American soul food - heavenly cheeseburgers and crispy fries, several types of grilled cheese sandwiches, BLT's, amazing breakfasts as well as an all you can eat Sunday Brunch buffet. The cakes, cookies and pie are homemade and defy description. It's a gathering place for locals as well as expatriates, They also maintain a lending library with English, German, French and Spanish books.

i believe this restaurant won the local chili cook off in 2013, it is delicious and safe for those who can't take extreme spice, it's just right! today i splurged and also had their pumpkin pie, which was delicious, all that was missing was the cream! a lot of english speaking people hang out here. very comfy, they even have... We finally made it to this famous place and we were not disappointed. The meatloaf was soooo good. Yum. Even my husband who was afraid that we would have too much to eat was thrilled that I shared it with him. We found a book that I had been wanting to read and the owner Lisa said "Just take it... We are visiting Atenas for a week, and have been to Gringo Postres twice - once for lunch and today for breakfast. The owners are extremely friendly and it is a nice atmosphere. I think we were happy to have some good old American food, instead of wondering what to expect when ordering. I wish Lisa and Harold good luck... More

So sorry to hear of the trouble with misunderstanding at check out. This is not normal for our place. It is possible that a mistake can be made, and I assure you I will watch for this more carefully. Please give us a second chance to make this right. I am however glad you enjoyed your meal! More

Harold, Lisa and staff provide good Down Home Cookin' mixed with good Down Home Hospitality! There is always a cup of coffee, a friendly conversation, and high quality food in abundance. Kay's is much more than a cafe it is very much the community coffee shop!

Had to go here because the owner is from Texas like me. Breakfast was great. Home fries were excellent. Going back tomorrow on the way to the airport. Not sure about Too Bad . . . So Sad review. Kept us from going for several days. But there are plenty of open views and bookshelves. Sounds like someone doesn't like... More

This is a great place to eat and mingle with other expats. They are very helpful getting you situated if you're new in town. They have a great lending library as well. I met so many wonderful people here including the owners.

Stopped in for lunch today to try Lisa's famous new salad - and it was the best I have had in Atenas, if not Costa Rica! Congratulations to Harold and Lisa, the new owners of Kay's on their new look and new feel of Kay's. Still homey, friendly, and consistent food. They make everyone welcome just as Kay and Tom... Loved these two sisters who have come in frequently. Thank you so much for a lovely review of our little slice of heaven. Don't forget us and the community as you travel to the desert back in the good old U.S.A. Stay cool! More

So sorry to hear of your disappointing experience at our new and much improved restaurant. Sadly, your visit coincided with our remodeling efforts. We regret that you thought we had gotten rid of the library. I assure you nothing could be farther from the truth. After erecting our 6' tall library protection walls in 4 of our 7 openings, we... We have visited Kay's several times during our week long visit to Atenas. Lisa and Harold are great friendly enthusiastic people. The food was very good, especially the Sunday brunch. They serve fresh local fruits, eggs, bacon, sausages, breads and muffins, and more. The patrons are friendly and full of information about the area, things to do, how they live... More

What a great place for great American food. I had the chili dog special with fries. It was a real american style chili dog! As good as any back home and better than most. Second trip there was for breakfast. Awesome traditional american breakfast. Best sausage gravy. Sweet lady. Great place. A+
