Lovely place

My Man and I came for a Saturday lunch, we thought that it would be very busy, but it was really quiet. It's a gorgeous building in a wonderful setting. We were very warmly greeted, and the food & service was spot on.

Visited for the first time on Saturday night, expectations high, based on the great reputation that this venue has. How disappointed were we all! The first member of staff we were greeted by didn't evening say hello or good evening! No smile and no warm welcome, and no dress code. Denim Jeans seems to be the acceptable uniform standard. Not... Went here for a birthday party on Saturday night and experienced what was possibly one of the best meals we have ever eaten. The squid and gravelax starters were delicious, but the rib of beef was like nothing we have ever tasted. Done to absolute perfection and it was evident that only the finest cut had been used from a... More

Pub is situated in a beautiful village. It has plenty of car parking. Attractive bar in old part of pub, which was very pleasant for a drink before lunch. Dining room is in more modern extension, and lacks atmosphere. With doors both ends, which didn't close by themselves once opened, it was a drafty experience. Staff all very friendly, service... Expectations were high based on the idyllic village setting and the great press this venue receives. We turned up early for lunch having not booked a table and despite there being a few, seemingly unoccupied, were told we would need to wait an hour. Optimism was high so decided to stay and enjoy the charms of the exposed beams and... More

Small unimaginative menu, but we all ordered a starter and main course. We were led through to the restaurant area which felt like a barn - It was also freezing. We were seated under a vent from which freezing cold wind was blowing directly on our heads! Not good! We mentioned this to the waiter, only for him to bring... More

I had a birthday dinner party for 12 on a busy Friday night. We were seated in a little room just for us, which made things feel very special. The food was lovely.... thoughtfully put together and every course delicious, very reasonably priced too. Thank you to the brilliant Brian and the marquess team for a great evening.

Whilst staying at the marquess of exeter I attempted to get a table for an evening meal. When I arrived at the restaurant I was advised of a 30 minute wait which I accepted and sat in front of the open fire with a drink looking forward to dinner. An hour later, after hearing myself discussed by bar staff and... More

This restaurant is just great, having been several times before we visited this Saturday to celebrate a birthday. Our favourite dish is the Derbyshire beef for 2 which we ordered again and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant also made us a delicious chocolate cake, which was preordered. It is a bit off the beaten track but well worth it, it... More

Three times now, some women friends and I have enjoyed dinner in this very welcoming village pub. It's actually rather more than a pub, since the restaurant area at the rear of the building is quite extensive. My gravad laks was delicately flavoured and attractively presented on a bed of green leaves. The sausages and mash were perfect (although it... More
