My very first visit to the 'Marquess', but the other diners had eaten there previously. The decor in both the bar and dining room was extremely tasteful, and with the log fire well stoked, the ambiance was excellent. The set lunch was our intention, and our only real criticism, was that the choice was very limited, with 3 starters, 3... More

A quiet winter Tuesday lunch by a roaring log fire with good food at a very reasonable price, attentive service and a house Pinot Grigio with surprising bags of flavour! The "Lunch for Less" menu at The Marquess is a quality bargain: a generous tasty bowl of Beetroot & Horseradish soup, followed by a piquant Mussels & Chorizo stew with... More

Part of the eat for less promo we visited one weekday...two courses for 12.95p....both courses were elegantly presented and very tasty and good value for money....plus the place was busy...with what appeared to be other satisfied customers on a wet sleety day. The offer runs till march I think...get in there quick!

I went for a meal with my son and Aunt (who has visited the restaurant on numerous occasions). I checked out the menu on-line before I went to give me some idea of the type of food on offer and was pleased to see it wasn't a long menu (a good sign), but still had something to please all of... I'm struggling to believe that the revues below are of the same Pub! The food was excellent as was the service. On a bleak rainy day there was a raging wood fire burning in the beautiful ancient bar area, a warm welcome from our host and very polite attentive service from the waitress. We had three courses each, a bottle... More

This was a return visit and sorry to report not as good as the first. We came for a bar lunch and loved the bar area again with roaring log fires and beautiful decor. I ordered the pastrami on sourdough, but this time no sourdough - just white baguettes which was very disappointing. Good bar selection of drinks. The service... More

The food and surroundings of this pub cannot be faulted. However the service we encountered was some of the worst we have ever experienced. The staff were rude and often absent. We had to go and find them on numerous occasions and when we did they were rude. For this reason we won't be going back.

Cosy bar area - the dog loved it. The Beef rib to share was outstanding but not too impressed with the starter and desserts.

The Marquess of Exeter is set in a beautiful village and is itself a beautiful old building, full of charm and character. Definitely more of a restaurant than a pub, it oozes a wonderful olde world atmosphere. Our party of eight booked a few weeks ahead and were a little taken aback when our arrival seemed to provoke a small... More
