Description: The Derby Arms joined the Ainscoughs Pub team in December 2008 after extensive restoration. Serving good food, beer and wine in a traditional environment with log fires and period furniture just like the rest of the pubs in the group. We have now been recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide for 2014 and have won the 'Pub of the Season' award, CAMRA. We have a games room with a pool table and dart board which is intended to form the focus of the village. The Derby Arms was purchased from Punch Taverns by the Witherslack Community Land Trust and the Ainscough Family took over the lease to preserve it as part of Witherslack life. Part of the pub was converted into the village shop, run by the community with community shareholders.

A lovely pub with a great local ale selection and ambience. The issue we have was the food. We ordered the Sunday roast and since there was a gluten free option we took it, however we were disappointed to learn that the gluten free option meant that you got no Yorkshire pudding rather than a G/F Yorkshire. This was odd... More

Hi there, many thanks for taking the time to review your experience, albeit a mixed one. It is the understanding of my staff on the day that a gluten-free Yorkshire pudding was not requested - had one been requested we would certainly have endeavoured to make one up for you. I don't believe the rather throwaway comment that "the chef... More

We found this place via the good pub guide 2015 and thought it was a perfect stop off for a couple or family who want to rock up in walking boots and fill their tummies in a friendly warm pub with a good atmosphere. We are roast lamb and the beef burger, yummy! It has rooms for about £75-£85 a... More

Hi there, many thanks for the review - we are indeed very walker-friendly, and we frequently have guests who use us as a base to enjoy the best of the Lakeland fells. We hope you'll drop by again in future. Regards, Chris Hoyle, General Manager More

This pub came highly recommended and we went drawn by pictures of crackling fires and a cosy environment. I also wanted to indulge in the highly rated small portion of fish and chips so high expectations.. On arrival we were disappointed to find only one small fire lit in an area that was very dowdy. Grey walls?, bare floors and... More

Good Afternoon, Many thanks for taking the time to review your experience –I feel compelled to respond. The fire in the bar area is lit constantly in a rather large hearth; had you requested the fire in the dining room to be lit, we would have been more than happy to oblige. I find it odd to hear our bar... More

Quirky pub atmosphere. The staff are great, made us very welcome. Food was very good, well presented, good portions and very tasty. We relaxed with a wine in the bar after our meal. Great find and look forward to returning.

We've visited this pub a few times and it is consistently first class. The only reason I have not written this review before is that I am selfish and don't want it to get too popular! The atmosphere is one of a true country pub not ruined by any pseudo makeover. The beer is superb with a reasonable amount of... More

We came here because we were staying at the Beech Hill B&B just a matter of minutes down the road - What we found was a fantastic pub serving a range of excellent beers (Thwaites Nutty Black was available) and good wines - early in the evening it seemed a place where people would pop in after work to catch... This pub/restaurant is great for families, dogs, walkers, in fact anyone who appreciates good food. It has a lovely ambience and the food was utterly delicious on both occasions we visited before we left for home. If only we had found it at the beginning of the week!

Good Morning, Many thanks for your comments first and foremost. In the local area unless a pub is serving food all day (as we do on a Saturday and Sunday), it is likely that most will only serve food between say 11/12 and 2/3, and then re-open at 5 or 6 for service - this is the case for the...
