The Derby Arms joined the Ainscoughs Pub team in December 2008 after extensive restoration. Serving good food, beer and wine in a traditional environment with log fires and period furniture just like the rest of the pubs in the group. We have now been recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide for 2014 and have won the 'Pub of the Season' award, CAMRA. We have a games room with a pool table and dart board which is intended to form the focus of the village. The Derby Arms was purchased from Punch Taverns by the Witherslack Community Land Trust and the Ainscough Family took over the lease to preserve it as part of Witherslack life. Part of the pub was converted into the village shop, run by the community with community shareholders.

Great pub grub

Good selection of real ales and ciders. Food traditional and good value. Best to book at weekends as the pub filled up quite quickly.

A comfortable pub with a real bar. Divided into more formal restaurant and large open plan bar. Similar ambiance to its sister pub, Strickland Arms 4m east. Described as having "fires", which is misleading: when pub opened there were two, and needed. However, one has been out of action ever since. Food can be variable and with some long waits,... More

Hello there, We do indeed, as described, have two open fires which are lit regularly. I'm sorry that you find our six real ales (three permanent, three guest - versus the Strickland Arms' five) to be a limited selection (?) - if there's anything in particular you would like to see on tap, feedback either in person or via other... Visited for recent lunch on a Saturday - Feb 2015 - about £12pp - and found it to be superb. Aim to avoid the rush by going a bit later - they serve all day. Large fish and chips would feed two hungry adults - don't be afraid to ask for the smaller version at £8. Risotto might need some... More

Great place to stop on way to south lakes for lunch. Roaring log fires welcomed us on a cold day in early February. Good sandwiches and big pot of Yorkshire tea! Just the job before an afternoon walk!

We have eaten at The Derby Arms many times and have recommended the Pub to many customers over the years.Never again,we had a meal with friends on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year and served a slice of turkey breast cut in the shape of a chicken breast as a chicken breast.Could not believe it.No apology from the manager... Stayed for a night between Christmas and New Year, room was warm and spotless with a large comfy bed and a huge rolltop bath. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the welcoming dining room beside the roaring fire. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Many thanks for a very friendly welcoming stay.

A lovely pub with a great local ale selection and ambience. The issue we have was the food. We ordered the Sunday roast and since there was a gluten free option we took it, however we were disappointed to learn that the gluten free option meant that you got no Yorkshire pudding rather than a G/F Yorkshire. This was odd... More

Hi there, many thanks for taking the time to review your experience, albeit a mixed one. It is the understanding of my staff on the day that a gluten-free Yorkshire pudding was not requested - had one been requested we would certainly have endeavoured to make one up for you. I don't believe the rather throwaway comment that "the chef... More

We found this place via the good pub guide 2015 and thought it was a perfect stop off for a couple or family who want to rock up in walking boots and fill their tummies in a friendly warm pub with a good atmosphere.
