The Derby Arms joined the Ainscoughs Pub team in December 2008 after extensive restoration. Serving good food, beer and wine in a traditional environment with log fires and period furniture just like the rest of the pubs in the group. We have now been recommended in the Michelin Pub Guide for 2014 and have won the 'Pub of the Season' award, CAMRA. We have a games room with a pool table and dart board which is intended to form the focus of the village. The Derby Arms was purchased from Punch Taverns by the Witherslack Community Land Trust and the Ainscough Family took over the lease to preserve it as part of Witherslack life. Part of the pub was converted into the village shop, run by the community with community shareholders.

Great pub grub

Good selection of real ales and ciders. Food traditional and good value. Best to book at weekends as the pub filled up quite quickly.

Arrived early - table already set up soon became obvious the table had not been wiped after the previous occupants. Sticky rings of dried beer so asked for table to be wiped. Staff very apologetic. Handed the menu and was advised the burger was not available - not a problem - I don't go out for a meal to have... More

Visited for recent lunch on a Saturday - Feb 2015 - about £12pp - and found it to be superb so went back in March for a quiet sunday roast which was very poor. Told the waiter when he asked the usual "is everything OK?" "No, it's not the usual standard...the meat's bloody, carrots aren't cooked" Nothing happened. Except I've... More

A comfortable pub with a real bar. Divided into more formal restaurant and large open plan bar. Similar ambiance to its sister pub, Strickland Arms 4m east. Described as having "fires", which is misleading: when pub opened there were two, and needed. However, one has been out of action ever since. Food can be variable and with some long waits,... More

Hello there, We do indeed, as described, have two open fires which are lit regularly. I'm sorry that you find our six real ales (three permanent, three guest - versus the Strickland Arms' five) to be a limited selection (?) - if there's anything in particular you would like to see on tap, feedback either in person or via other... Visited for recent lunch on a Saturday - Feb 2015 - about £12pp - and found it to be superb. Aim to avoid the rush by going a bit later - they serve all day. Large fish and chips would feed two hungry adults - don't be afraid to ask for the smaller version at £8. Risotto might need some... More

Great place to stop on way to south lakes for lunch. Roaring log fires welcomed us on a cold day in early February. Good sandwiches and big pot of Yorkshire tea! Just the job before an afternoon walk!
