fantastic family-friendly and breezy lakeside cafe surrounded by wasps

If nearby Watford football club is nicknamed the Hornets then it is fitting that neighbouring Rickmansworth should be home to the wasps. This is where the wasps live. At this lovely lakeside cafe. Outside, inside, in my drink, in my food - all over the place. Not a single measure to keep them... read more

This place could be so good. However, the coffee here is probably the worst I've tasted outside of a sports stadium. It's clear no one who works here or manages it drinks or gives a hoot about coffee. There's a lot of mentions in previous reviews about poor service but on our visit this wasn't a problem but it was... More

It's always so disappointing for us when a reviewer tells Trip advisor about their experience without giving us a chance to improve. Our coffee is something we take very seriously. The grind of the bean is something that fluctuates quite dramatically with the weather. On these days we need to check the grind very regularly (every hour) to ensure that... More

I have been eating and drinking here on and off since the place opened. The past couple of years have seen this place become ridiculously overpriced with slow service. I always begrudge buying anything. The ingredients are meant to be all the best but honestly I don't think this is the place to be indulging in superior quality ingredients with... More

I'm really sorry to hear that you don't feel we represent good value. We use an industry standard margin but what is different about us to other restaurants is that we pay our staff fairly. This means that we pay way above the minimum wage and we pay an annual salary to all our staff, that means we pay them... More

A few years ago I went and this place was lovely. I went last year and it had slipped to below average but at near London prices. I went again this year and it was much worse. I only went in as there wasn't the usual huge queue (but there were many, many wasps). However, inexplicably the food took just... More

Sorry to hear that you were not happy with your visit. I totally appreciate that a 45 minute wait is not acceptable, unfortunately with the size of our kitchen, we simply can not go any faster and there are times (only on our very peak days) where we just have a bottle neck of orders. I hope that when your... More

We visited the cafe in the park today. It was a nice day and granted they were very busy. The service was very slow and the queue moved very slowly. When you get near the counter, you can see the UNCOVERED (why!?) cakes and biscuits were constantly being invaded by a storm of bees and wasps. Yucky. My little one... More

Obviously you were very disappointed with your visit. I am sorry to hear about the wasp incident, I agree it was far from ideal. We have had a real issue with wasps and have brought in a couple of experts who have been unable to help us. However, I agree that what happened with the ice cream is not acceptable... More

Food is wonderful and the menu changes often, the specials are irresistible. Staff are so friendly and welcoming and the place is always packed! The surroundings are beautiful. We visit the cafe for a special treat as prices seem to have gone up recently!

We visited on a Saturday morning days after the Cafe had been voted #2 in the country. It wasn't particularly busy, however there didn't seem to be any order to the queuing system at the counter, staff weren't sure who was waiting to order and who was waiting to collect drinks. Our friends' breakfasts arrived pretty promptly and, other than... More

I go here regularly for coffee and to sit and do work. Really nice atmosphere and I personally love the quiet room away from the noise of the main café. A good selection of food although my vast food intolerance means I can't eat here. However they do a lot of gluten-free options which is great for gluten free people.

Great little spot in the park - very charming setting. Food is great - I always go for the chicken street salad (quinoa, chicken, tomatoes etc). They do really tasty flapjacks, muffins etc too. Sometimes gets quite noisy as the main room has high ceilings and its a hot spot for mothers with small children. However there's a smaller room... More

It really is, something of Australia out of nowhere everything available to eat being fresh and homemade. Initially ordering a scone the size of a Kookaburra ball paired with obligatory flat white, I helped polish off the rest of my family's lunch. Simple but effective skin on fries were had with a shared flat bread based haloumi salad, again all... More

How lovely, thank you so much for your review. This isn't the first time somebody has compared us to places in Australia, we will have to get out there and have a look for ourselves. So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. Carly More
